only advice would be to bite the bullet and pay - it gets you out of there and that amount will probably go up in the years to come.

Very roughly, in laymans terms (a very thick layman), leasehold is where you buy the house for a certain number of years. Normal leases were nearly always 99 years - after this time, it's no longer yours.
I suspect that timespan has probably changed now, however I'm no longer in the property game :|

It's about the land I believe, you own the house, but the land it's built on is leased. Freehold is when you own the house and the land.

That said - I could be, and probably am, wrong.
