IA-64 and Hammer

According to my comp. arch. revision guide, which only goes up to Pentium II, consumer versions of the IA-64 really ought to be appearing as consumer models by now...

Is there a timescale for such a thing? I've heard of Itanium but only if it's name, and a extremetech comparison with ClawHammer.

Is this going to be for real? Or are our wallets safe?

These two processors represent a step from 32bit computing to 64bit computing but a number of problems exist:

1. 64bit processors require 64bit compatible OS and Applications.
2. Itanium is slower when executing 32bit apps using its compatibility mode than current 32bit processors
3. AMD Hammer is still not available outside AMD and it's closest partners.

Find out more in this little article http://techupdate.zdnet.co.uk/story/0,,t481-s2125122,00.html

Its only a matter of time before we all have 64bit computers ;)
