Eve is a great game it doesnt really get good until 9 months or so in though , but if you like carebearing or pve in other games this wont be a major issue :D

Once afew months in if bored maybe buy a character on the EvE - O forun ;)

Find a decent corp - is Eve University still running? If you're not playing with friends that corp may help you get up and running and understanding just what Eve has to offer.

Oooh. And give up your day job.

If you've bought it give me a shout and I'll give you some links to useful threads/places to go.

basically - you're not safe anywhere if someone decides they want to kill you. Just remmeber that and you're half way there.

If you can't afford to replace it, be wary of undocking in it.

Missions in empire are ok - grab yourself the destroyer skill asap and train for long rang weapons so you can nuke baddies from outside their range (makes it easier to do missions)

GL, HF and remember empire is about 25% of eve. You can do practically anything you like but training takes time and patience. The good thing is you can train afk. The bad thing is almost everything takes skills - this can make the start of life very frustrating.

Its a good game for PvE and very immersive. I just didn't get enough from the PVP in the long run. Loved the content though!

You don't have the prerequisite skill to train that skill to train that skill.

Oh, and if you shoot an NPC, the rules say that if your drones automatically attack someone because they looted your wreck, then you are to blame and so they can kill you. ... hmmm.

Also, if someone blows you up in a suicide attack, the insurance company will reimburse them the cost of their ship. Lunacy.

I think it's a poor, ill-conceived game, though I can see how PvP would be interesting if you managed to accumulate enough skills.

Indeed - would be silly if you could train 'I have a big stupid op'd ship' from day 1 wouldn't it? There would be no variation and everyone would be in the same ship.

Oh, and if you shoot an NPC, the rules say that if your drones automatically attack someone because they looted your wreck, then you are to blame and so they can kill you. ... hmmm.

If they've commited a crime against you then you can choose to do something about it. If you choose to retaliate with direct action they can defend themselves. If you can't control your drones then learn.

Also, if someone blows you up in a suicide attack, the insurance company will reimburse them the cost of their ship. Lunacy.

I'll give you that one - it's daft but you can take steps to make sure you don't get insta-gibbed by most suiciders. Also you should be covered by insurance as well (T2's really shouldn't be dying to suiciders if you're not afking across the universe).

I think it's a poor, ill-conceived game, though I can see how PvP would be interesting if you managed to accumulate enough skills.

You can PvP effectively from pretty early on if you're in a decent corp and the need tackle - just don't expect to roll into the game completely unprepared and go on a gank fest in the biggest ship in the game after 3 hours. You'll not be a gank machine for a while but you'll be an integral gang member for stuff other than capship shoot outs or sniper gangs.

It was a poor, ill-conceived game 7 years back. One can't deny it's one of the most immersive games when it comes to player control and freedom at the moment.

It's surely not lunacy to put EVERY SHINY THING YOU OWN IN A TECH1 CRUISER WITH NO TANK WHATSOEVER.....

What I like best is when they fit nothing but cargo expanders giving them EVEN LESS TANK and making their ship SLOWER too...

I think eve is an awesome game. I think the lag at the moment is killing it and if they can't find and squash the lag soon 0,0 conflicts will die and then empire will atrophy.

Without the suicide gankers buying / acquring your shinies and the pvp junkies in 0,0 needing new ships empire will cease to have a purpose.

Well i've been pottering about the last 3 or 4 days and after getting over the pretty brutal learning curve

(spending 2 hours trying to work out how to scan for gravimetrics, getting killed by random maniac spaceman while looking at the map doing the scans and forgetting how to close it in panic, couple of trips across the universe as a courier, without the items in my cargo hold, going out for revenge a ship with new weapons and no ammo in them.... etc etc)

I'm starting to enjoy myself now. I do like a game that punishes you for being stupid. I've not had that looking over my shoulder constantly feeling since I stopped playing UO :)

I'm sure theres a fair few more mistakes in the pipeline for me, but ive got a few spare ships a pile of cash and equipment squirreled away now so bring it on :)

I like eve more the older I get. It is not a game that can be played well drunk after many beers at 2am on a sunday morning.

Well, I just quit. I didn't enjoy Eve at all. Worst of all, it made me thing of Elite in a bad light.... man, I used to love that game.

One of the few things I do like about Eve is it's potential to be great. I wouldn't write off going back, but it won't be for a very long time.

The second they implement a pve server I'll ditch all other games and play EvE exclusively.

i dont really care much about the "pvp" in this game anymore, so a pve server would fit me nicely.

PvE is so anti the original Eve ethic that if they made one a little bit of me would die inside.

Yeah it is, but you cant say that the pvp is anywhere near the original EvE ethics either...

For me the game is so far beyond the point of rescue that it wont matter anymore.

In many ways a lot of what you said was right - the bit on trading was very very wrong. You can get margins but you have to work hard at it. The fastest way to make isk is of course on the big quantities of minerals but it is not the only way.

I made a real killing in Tech II production. Had a decent supply chain from BPC's right through to the end product.

The other thing is that when it comes to PvP Eve is at its best in small gang PvP - its just hard to find small gangs ;p

The new Providence looks very interesting.
