i bought a pressie the other day with my CC, about 8 days ago. i noticed i never got charged. i contacted my CC company who said "as soon as the card is swiped we give authorisation to the shop that they can taken the money. in 7-10 days they will then take those funds. but it seems we never recieved a request for authorisation to debit your account. looks like they have done something wrong, i cant say for certain but its possible you got that item for free" ..

Strange that they would dispatch the item without a successful payment though, or if you paid in person, you would have had to sign a receipt which would have been printed post authorisation?

heh, I'd laugh as well. Until I discovered I myself had been charged in error for something I didn't buy from somewhere else, at which point I'd be screaming blue murder down the phone at somebody :D

I once bought 2 PC's for work, online using my own CC. We got invoiced but I never got charged. I did of course claim back the "cost" on my expenses :)

totally fluent :p

chip and pin is no more than a 32-bit encrypted txt file

basically containing ur cc number exp date etc, it sends this down the line with no return signal as its the chip that has ur pin on it :D

overall its secure in that no one can take ur pin from teh file however u only need card no and exp date to buy online etc

Its more secure than the old 16 bit encryption by a long way and you cant just 'hack in' to the Pos system - all terminals are registered and have their own dynamic encryption key.

You can in theory crack the 32bit encryption and get the pin but its very expensive and at the end of the day you probably end up with the details of someone with a few hundred left on their card... Not worth the effort...

Of course they send the card number in the transaction request - how else would they identify the card being used to make a purchase???

Those terminals that you enter your pin in dont have enough "shelter" against prying eyes. Its very easy for someone to see the pin number you just entered...

I've thought that too dys, although you run the same risk at an ATM (which incidentally is a prime source for fraudsters).

When i'm using my chip/pin, i'll be making sure i keep it close to my chest - im still on goby signature cards at the mo.

I wasn't under the impression that credit card companies actually gave a shite about security.

Security... mmmm nah, debt yes. Working for a bank, there is a trade-off between security level and what the customer is prepared to accept.

My dad is hopeless about online banking: "all these bloody passwords and security questions, just give me my money" etc. So for idiots like him (there are plenty of people like him) we need a little bit of give and have to make it a little easier. When it comes to the actual application process, some people find it incredibly intrusive that they're asked for name and address verification for money laundering purposes, but fuck sake, it's to protect them and their money and to stop them being a target of identity theft (in addition to the bank too).

Subsequently, the chip and pin is what ... four digits? A bit shit imo, you could easily clock four digits, but if the pin was eight or ten it'd be harder to see/remember. The public wouldn't have it; for reasons similar to the above.
