...with a controller. I just can't get into playing FPS games on my PS3, (Battlefield: Bad Company sits there on my shelf, laughing at me), so I'm thinking about getting one of these: 3 XFPS Rate Up Keyboard/Mouse Adaptor. Anyone had a go with one?

Its not just a matter of getting "better", I just don't like playing FPS with a controller; it always feels slow and ponderous. Any other kind of game and the controller is fine, but with FPS it just takes all the fun out of it.

I usually turn the sensitivity all the way up on the Console FPS to get a better reaction out of the controller, Console FPS's can work but the Dual Shock controller is really not suited for it, hopefully the Wii remote will get better with the new motion sensor thing but then again Metroid 3 turned out ok. The 360 and N64 controllers work out ok as they fit nicely in the hands and the analog sticks are in the right place.

But to contradict myself nothing beats the keyboard and mouse for FPS's

Surely using a mouse on a console FPS would make them so easy as to pose no challenge whatsoever?

Why would you ever even want to play an FPS on a console? Some people are fucking insane.

It's just staggering how many morons are willing to play a game with an inherently flawed control system. Imagine trying to strafe jump and doing a 180 to throw a rocket into someone mid air on a console. Impossible. PC? Easy. (Quake Live shall rule!)

Playing FPS on a console is neither here nor there, its playing FPS with a controller that's the issue. If the publishers wanted to migrate all the PC FPS players over (and the likes of EA would seem to prefer that, as the latest in their most popular PC FPS franchise is only available on console), all they have to do is give a mouse/kb option; the only ones left playing PC would be those in it purely for the technology. (It would also let them develop proper MMOs). Its not like MS and Sony don't support keyboards anyway, so why not let us use them for gaming? Unfair advantage? You could make that claim against someone using a steering wheel for a driving game, but no-one bats an eyelid about that. Makes no sense to me.

Agreed m8. Always feels to me like walking through treacle. Even with the sensitivity turned up it still feels awkward.

Can't beat a good mouse for an FPS tbh.

MS and Sony don't like people using KB/Mouse combos on their consoles simply because they want to keep them consoles, not be like PCs. Microsoft especially hate it and won't let anyone develop games for their machine that need a kb/mouse.

Yep I have pulled it off a few times on 360, defo not easy though. I long for full keyboard and mouse support on all consoles in all FPS, pads can be ok but for precsion they just don't cut the mustard.

correct on ms wrong for sony, they leave it up to the devs. resistance2, killzone2 both are supposed to have kb and mouse support

As Yaka says, this is completely incorrect for Sony. Not just because games do support KB/M, but fuck, they allow (and encourage) Linux installations. How much closer to a PC can you get? :)

There is a good reason not to allow it though - if game difficulty is balanced for people using a controller, switching to KB/M completely screws that and makes it too easy.

There's a big difference between not liking it and preventing people from doing it. I never meant to imply that Sony prevent people from doing so: as I clearly stated it is only MS that do that. Sony, however, still don't "like" keyboard and mouse combos, but are prepared to put up with them simply because it can make them more money. Why do you think there are no official Sony keyboards/mice? They're prepared to support them but they do not encourage them.

I would agree with that argument if the console companies applied that logic to every type of game, but they don't. They offer support for all kinds of specialist controllers (are you telling me a driving game where some people are using wheels and some people are using controllers is balanced?), so why should FPS be any different? As for easy or difficult, it never ceases to amaze me the number of people who've only ever played games on consoles who wouldn't dream of using mouse/kb; they'd find it weird; its only us PC types who know better, because we're used to it.

Gotta say, though I find it *much* more entertaining to play a racing game with a wheel, I find it easier with a pad. This is with the exception of GTR and GTR2 on the pc where using a joypad is just not a viable option at all.

The difference between wheel and pad is nothing like the difference between kb/mouse and pad. Using Gran Turismo 4 as an example, the fastest pad racers are right up there with the wheel racers. You can't say the same about FPS; it's not even close.
