Can anyone point in the direction of some basic graphic editing skillz... I don't really want to be able to do much creative stuff but... erm for example I'd like to be able to do stuff like give my Avatar a transparent background (I think will was the only one who saw my last disasterous attempt) :p Photoshop5.5 is the only software I have....If anyone could point me to some tutorials or something it would be cool :)

Open the image in PS,

choose the magic wand tool, click in the white area. You should see a black and white dotted line all round the white. Hit delete key. Save as gif, not jpeg.

Extract (and SmartExtract) from the Filter menu is the best way to extract part of an image from the background.

Hey summo, have you seen this?

I got it for christmas. I have only limited PS skills, but it a great book, with some excellent techniques for photo montages. I've always found that I read how a tool works, like dodge, burn and even the pen tool, but have no idea how to put them to use in practice. This is a great book for ideas how, and when, to use all that stuff, and more.

Course the guy is a Mac user, but it would be unfair to hold that against him ;)

BTW that link is to the best place I have found for buying PC books online. Next day delivery every time so far. And well packed. ( I hate books in bad condition)

Heh, I just knew that as soon as Summo saw this thread he'd transparentise the avatar himself. :)
