Can anyone recommend one? Or would I bet better getting an iPod? I have a few hundred pound to spend if necessary, but I want to be able to store alot of songs, and not have to buy new batteries every hour.
Help much appreciated!

I got a 20 gig USB 2.0 Nomad zen 2.0. Best thing i ever bought and you can now get 60 gig version for the same price i payed for mine 1 year ago. Highly reconmended.

Tho the Ipod is VERY nice too you get far more bang for buck with the Creative range IMO, also the Zen is a little bigger and bulkier than the Ipod but not much in it at all.

If you get the creative player visit here www.redchairsoftware.com as the program is far better than the Bundled shite you get with it. File management (the Zen acts as another hard drive), music management, TrueStream and tonnes of other stuff for this software which gets updated every 2-3 weeks. Well worth the registration fee which works out at about £15 for updates for a very long time...

I want one too! But it has to look as good as an ipod, but not as pricey. Impossible task, or does somebody wanna prove me wrong? (please :p)

Ok, as you want to store "a lot of songs", then you're going to want a HDD-based player (as memory-based ones only hold a couple of hours at most). Basically, your choice is pretty much between a Creative Zen (I would recommend this one - you can get the 20GB version for around £200 if you shop around) or an iPod (£300 for the 30GB model, including dock, remote and carry-case). It's really your choice as to how much you want to spend. If you want the greatest bang:buck ratio, then probably go for the Creative. If you want the best and aren't worried about cost, go with an iPod.

(P.S. *cough*)

Man, I was under the impressions that mp3 players were not this expensive. :(

The only thing the Ipod has over the Zen is looks and interface. Sound quality (from the one i heard anyway) wasnt quite as sweet as the zen hence me picking the creative one. There is an obscene amount of stuff you can do with the Zen...

www.nomadness.net for ideas, fancy swapping a 20 gig hd with a 60? Feel free.... :)

I'm also in the market for an mp3 player, but I need a non-jogabble, out-door-y type one. I guess that means stick/flash memory types ...... which seem to only come in low capacity format. Anyone got advice on these please?

Only issue with ipod is the battery life, which is complete pants.
Mine used to last about 6 or 7 hours, ish, which isnt impressive frankly.
Its a year or so old now and I have to charge it every day. I reckon its good for about 4 or maybe 5 hours now. And to replace the batttery is £200 or so I believe.
And the batttery goes flat even if you dont use it.

That said, i still use it daily. I've dropped it several times (so hard i deeply scratched the plastic) and it still works. The bundled software is complete wank, but iTunes is a free download and does the trick.

Overall, no regrets over buying an ipod, just frustration at the battery problem.

That looks rather spanky if you ask me and i think its solid state

http://www.nomadworld.com/products/Jukebox_Zen/ Thats the one i got and i used to jog daily to work every day with it and its still alive and kicking. And yes Ted, the battery life on these things isnt particularily good but 6 hrs??

I get at least 12 hrs with EAX enabled etc etc, maybe you should have a look at your waranty :)

Ted, what battery technology does it use? It might just use an off-the-shelf battery design, in which case you should be able to replace it easily enough yourself. A year of constant use sounds fair enough for a battery to me.

If you're looking for something on a tighter budget, you might want to try an MP3/CD solution - reads your MP3s off a data CD, so storage space is limited only by how many CDs you've got (although carrying around 50-odd CDs to match the iPod's 30GB capacity is somewhat daunting).

Advantages:
  • Cheap (around £100, but varies significantly)
  • Potentially infinite storage space
  • Often uses standard rechargable batteries (I get about 8 hours of play out of mine on a single charge, and it's simple enough to swap in another set)
Disadvanges:
  • Rather bulkier than a HDD-based player, especially if you're carrying CDs around with you as well.
  • Burning CDs is rather more of a hassle than simply uploading MP3s to the player.

I said earlier, 12 hrs with EAX enabled (the frequency adjuster), the last bar on the battery marker takes an aaage to deplete. Not sure about the 60 gig version, id assume slightly less as it must be working slightly harder.

The Zen NX is actually inferior to the one i got, hasnt as many features and you can also get a Remote with Radio FM/AM that also records via an input on the remote itself so you could plug it into a radio and record that way. This is difficult to get hold of tho (or at least it was) and tbh, i have no need for it with 4000 tracks on it.

Just to re-iterate, make sure you get the Notmad Explorer from www.redchairsoftware.com as the bundled software is utter cack and make sure you get the latest firmware installed, tho if you order new now i believe its already loaded on.

I believe the iPod only comes with a firewire cable, so if you wish to use USB 2.0, you must by the cable separately. Problem is that the iPod only works with cables that are designed for it, so you'll have to by them from Apple if you can't find a third-party manufacturer, and Apple has a reputation for making expensive things.

The Creative JukeBox Zen 20GB has been recently discontinued by Maplin Electronics. They've taken it off their web site, but you can ring any store and ask them to check price and location. Last I checked, it was £174.98. Shop around. It's a fabulous player, regardless of its age (order code: L13AK).

On the other hand, I advise customers to purchase a CD/MP3 player because of its' swappable medium nature. It's versatility has advantages over the expensive pocket MP3 players, and we're selling one for only £29.99 (order code: L13AH). Current promotion ends 24th December.

No, I won't earn commission from this.

I have an 8CM CD one, too. The battery life in mine is but poor and the discs are but expensive. It takes but two AAA's, so its max. capacity is but 1500maH. Good luck trying to find rewritable ones. Not worth it. The 8CM discs alone are cooler.
