...fortunately, I'm flying off on a trip to Namibia and Botswana on safari tomorrow! Yay! See you in a few weeks if I don't get killed by a Hippo.

That sounds amazing. Take lots of pictures for us. And be careful hiding under your duvet in case snakes crawl in with you for shade :p

Well, apart from the fact I'm going with my girlfriend, "native booty"? Ignoring the interesting turn of phrase; in Africa? Are you kidding? It would be like playing Russian Roulette with an automatic.

Enjoy hope you see lots of animals! Try and go on a night drive if possible as well. Its a fantatsic experience especially trying to dodge spider webs that span the road...

Went to Windhoek a few years ago, nice place and great people. Desert Safaris are quite amazing up North. Botswana is great for the traditional Safari.

Have a great trip.

I'm going to get the photos up on Flickr in the next day or two, and do a blog update (I took notes but had no internet access). Crossing the Okovango Delta in Mokoros (dugouts), swimming elephants in Chobe, and bungy jumping off the Vic Falls bridge were all highlights :). Not to mention getting attacked by a monkey and pissing off a large crocodile...

Great work Gaff. The two sunsets (i'm a sucker for clouds and sunset glows) and the Impala in the bush are my three favs; it can't have been easy to shoot the animals at that focal length and keep them as razor sharp as that!

What sorts of shutter speeds and aperture did you use, and on what camera?

Ta. The Impala is my favourite as well, mainly because I was perched on top of a truck and one of my travelling companions wouldn't shut up and was spooking them. Camera is a Nikon D60 with a very good VR 70-300mm zoom (that flatters my ineptness). I've just looked it up and it was:

Exposure: 0.002 sec (1/500)
Aperture: f/5.6
Focal Length: 260 mm
ISO Speed: 280

I'm only really starting to play with the camera properly now (I bought it for the safari trip and its my first digital SLR). GF has bought us a weekend away in the west of Ireland as a Christmas pressie and I'm hoping to practice a bit more then.

And take photos.
