I Hate British Telecom

British Telecom have decided to reward its workers (eg. my dad) with no free internet access. The new 0800 free weekend on btinternet is not available for british telecom employees, THE BASTARDS, means i still have to pay the phone calls.

Cable, Ca-a-able, cable, cable.......

Oh, and Cambridge Cable is owned by NTL so I may even see a cable modem in the not so distant future...

I'm with Yorkshire Cable (Telewest) who've yet to come up with a Cable Modem 'plan'. BTW Microsoft have just bought around 29% in Telewest. Is this good??

I live in a land where nothing like "cable modems" ever happen, just plain old BT for me, and a remote comapny that does cable TV and telephone called EUROBELL, and they are actually quite crap. I doubt very much if they ever would do cable modems, but if anyone would differ please let me know.
thank yee all, the sons of barrysworld

Well, call me what u like, I GOT BT's little toy 0800 service and what can I say

Connection 52000 (using V90)

Quake2 Ping on Clara CTC - same as BW connection

Download speed - as good as it gets 5.6 is average speed i suppose.

Lets be honest - I tried X-Stream's so called 0800 number. Heh, now thats a joke
smile.gif
Dont belive me? TRY IT!
I dont care who brings the 0800 services around - like DR F, we, the southwesters - aint gonna get shite until they next century.... so I'm all fer supporting anyone who will bring me a free phone number

let's just hope that they do......

I think AOL's descision to do 0800 + the monthly charge is fine...

Only problem is it's AOL
smile.gif

If Nildram was to bring out an 0800 number at weekends, I would use that, would be willing to pay upwards of 25quid for the priveledge a month.

But I'm waiting for LocalTel Screaming Net at the moment. I shall inform on the quality as and when
smile.gif

So far I have heard nothing but rave reviews - 150-170 ping - not bad for a free number

I wouldn't expect comtel users to have cable modem access anytime soon. As you may know, NTL are doing cable modem rollouts in different places at different times. Personally, knowing how shit comtel's network is (it's *really* bad) then it'll take NTL a while to refit the network to provide their new services.

ADSL will be available within the next couple of months with 2 choices. 2mb download or 512k download.
Dont know the upload speeds.
The 2mb option should be £50 a month.

ADSL will be released by BT very soon, except i was never aware that it would be so cheap. I read a little while ago of huge prices (like £500 per month) as it would be for business users. But hey, if its that cheap im getting it, Loads better than cable modems no matter what the speed.

Right. I've had a scour 'cos I didn't know what ASDL was. I now know it's over copper and can download at speeds approaching 2Mb and upload at speeds of about 64K (although the BT trial says 384K).

BT have a trial running about 20 miles to the east of me, but according to their site (http://www.isntrial.bt.com) they have no commercial plans at this time.

Kingston Comms in Hull also have some sort of trial.

Stateside ASDL retails at about $65 per month with an initial connection of $150. No idea how much the modems will cost.

When I contacted NTL they say that cable modem rollout isn't happening yet and that existing subscribers to their ISP service will get preference with limited availability for the first 12 months. This service will cost £40 per month. A cable modem will set you back about £150, but you get permanent 512K connection to the internet at no additional cost.

So basically, don't hold yer breath for ASDL or Cable Modems in the UK. Highway still seems the fastest option. I'm just going to plump for a second cable telephone line with upped gain and wait the course.

I'll gladly stand corrected to any of this of course and have my direct debit form signing pen poised for action. Let's have a URL for the nationwide ASDL rollout in two months!

A country where they have to pay for the phone calls to dial up isp, don't have cable modems, and have probably never heard of ADSL. Sad

OK, the reason i was questioning the goings on with BT and ADSL is because ADSL is better than cable modems.

Cable modems do not have a set bandwidth, if your whole street (say 50 ppl) has a cable modem, you will NOT get the max speeds than NTL say (and there minimum speed is looking optimistic) whereas ADSL will give you a constant, the speed they say will be the speed you get, and as it's a flat rate service, it will be better, and will mean you don't have to have new wires and things coming to your house (at least I don't think you do
smile.gif
)

Thats my little bit over and done with, oh, is that little prick still spamming this board, BW, can't you BAN him? There must be a way

I think mckerney is an inspiration to us all - for vasectomy*. Pleasant fellow, always willing to offer his 2p worth, never shy of offering an opinion. Definately... vasectomy*.

P.S. I don't have to know everything about everything to be a great human being. Shit! Do I?
