I'm curious: It says there that IBM did research into the same thing and produced a working demo. How are Microsoft allowed to patent it?

If IBM didn't patent it then it's fair game.

Depends on the country. Some countries have the concept of "prior art" which prevents people from patenting something that someone else invtented (even if the other person didn't patent it). I don't think america has such a law though.

Patent law is different in Uk & Europe. Its not as Global as you might think.
