@ECA was yammering on about the cult of 4K and I was getting more and more depressed at the performance of the God Box (tm). Ofc, I realize that the game I am currently playing, Far Cry 4, is "not a real PC game" as ECA puts it, i.e. it's a console port, as are all the Far Cry's since 2.
So one could construe that FC4 is poorly optimized for PC, that it has all kinds of poorly implemented eye-candy features that nobody could possibly run on a resolution over 1080p without resorting to arcane offerings and elder-god cock sucking, that kind of thing. "Real" games, as ECA puts it, do not have that sort of problem. I tend to agree, but I also have enough commercial/political insight to realize that developers aren't going to give the PC the optimizations it's due for various reasons.
Anyway, I was simply miffed that FC4 was chugging along at <60FPS and I couldn't select the highest graphics settings available to me, even though I am rocking a fairly hefty system. The beautiful >60FPS milestone was always just out of reach, and I don't have SLI, many GHz's and a 1440p screen to play games on "medium" settings. So I got to faffing about with my game and driver settings while I am actually supposed to be writing a thesis (*cough*), and @Gwadien actually caught me at it and laughed at me through Steam Chat, the cvnt. Still, this faffing was not without result:
So, having sorted that out, I am back at very high / ultra settings, and am running an average of 60FPS or greater according to Steam and Nvidia's FPS counters. This means I might actually get a 4K monitor now
I guess the moral of the story is: check your driver settings after updating. Don't trust a vendor to save your settings even when they promise they will.

Since the last time Nvidia updated my gForce drivers, it turned out the update disabled my SLI. I've been running on ONE 970GTX card since fuck knows when! FFS!
