HSF & Athlons

How much truth is there in the statement that the core's of Athlongs being incredibly fragile?

More to the point if you had a 700g lump of pure copper luvlyness strapped on to it would you remove the HSF unit when traveling to a LAN party?

If the answer is "yes" then why?
Surely if the HSF is clipped/bolted down properly there isnt any movement (hardly noticable anyway) and there shouldn't be a problem.

Anyone killed their cpu buy moving the rig about without removing the HSF unit?
I was just wondering if it is common thing as I'm taking my spanky new PC boxen to a LAN party this weekend and would rather get there with cpu functional ;)

It has little to do with the core, if it's clipped on to the ZIF socket then at 700g it might rip the whole thing off the mobo. Although it might still affect the core from the HSF bouncing and it's not something you want to do.

If it's attached using the 4 mounting holes then you might get away with it as long as you lay the case down so that the mobo is flat, horizontal.

I will be traveling with the case lying on its side. The whole thing being ripped off and bouncing around inside did occur to me.
I can see "desktop" style cases making a comeback unless AMD sort themselves out :D

I have until Saturday to decide whether or not to risk it....

I have a PAL8045 which is 500g i think

I have travelled 200miles with it recently upright and no problems

I have found that a tower with its side off and then put flat on its back is the coolest thing. The heat can then rise straight out of hte case

I can recomend the Alpha PAL8045 with a 3300 rpm fan.

Its quiet, cool ( i has dropped by temps by about 10/11C on average from a non-copper taisol 4800 rpm) and wont break your mobo unlike the FOP32-1 i had before the taisol (I now only have 5 cleats on my ZIF socket)

This is all new to me, I move my PC around alot, the heatsinks a thermoengine Turbo. Never had any problems with it falling off etc. Transport it standing, done it for months still works perfect!

Although it seems possible damage may occur but I find it unlikely, specially if you transport it side down.

nothing will happen to your rig unless you suddenly hit it with a lot of g's [ie drop it or something]. if you handle it with the normal care you apply to any electronic doodad you have you'll be just fine heh

yea I can imagine a heasink getting ripped out if you dropped it. :D

ok thats given me some confidence. I'll do the lie it on its side on nice fluffy pillows in the back of the car.

..if it breaks u lot are responsible! ;)

Just recomending the best just as you recomended the PAL, and if you're gonna oc then 1-2c is every thing :p

None of these worries with a P4. Just stick the heatsink on, engage the clips and forget about it.

If your going down the "air cooling" road you can't beat the "Silverado" or the "Super Silverado" for performance & quietness.
High performance air cooling does tend to get a bit noisey :D

Not true. My PAL is quieter and better than the Taisol i had on before it and the FOP32-1 i had before that

Think he might be reffering to sticking a Delta on it :)

Emb is on the right track, I have two 60mm Melco's on my HSF instead of 2 Delta's to keep the noise down.
I myself would consider a PAL "mid range" performancewise as there are more exotic HSF units out there.

I'd strongly advise against the silverado, we tested one a while back and found that after a couple of hours running the motors can get hot and spray the oil that lubricates them around a bit... a definite no-no

there are only two hsf that I know of that come in at over 700g, the swiftech MC/MCX462 and the dragon orb 3 - both of them have strong clipping solutions, but if you're fitting either without a shim I'd be extremely careful, the swifty's heatsink is mounted on springs and can still rock - those ickle foam pads won't protect your cpu core corners... the dragon orb can also 'tilt' slightly without a shim - for £4 worth of shim it's more than a worthwhile investment...

I made it! or my PC made it in one piece - not several ;)

A 45 mile round trip without the HSF ripping itself off the mobo. Laid the box down flat on the back seat (motherboard nearest the seat.. doh!)
Hit a few potholes/dips in the road at about 80mph but nay damage, so I'm not worrying for the future either when traveling to LANS - just takes a little bit of caution.

BTW the HSF = Kanie Hedgehog Type W

Assembled as per Kanie's instructions, unlike in most so called Tech site reviews.

schweeet ;)

I've seen heatsinks as light as the thermoengine get knocked off cpu sockets but it always takes excessive force, even if you'd put it in the boot (not recommended!) I reckon it would have survived... ;)

WOW!!! mines a thermoengine turbo, and Its not light!!! well at least not compared to these other ones:)

yep, it was a nasty accident... a thermoengines weak clip snapped and rolled around inside the case like a wrecking ball... it hit the AGP card with enough force to cause a permanant 'tilt' to the AGP socket, bent jumpers on the soundcard and motherboard - and left a small pile of components that had been torn off by it's rampage stuck between motherboard and system tray... ouch!
