how will BW advertise?

Its clear that the P2P idea has taken off slowly and i dont think its gonna get better by itself, people who didnt sign up straight away have obviously found somewhere else to play.

So what do people think BW should do to advertise the service?

One good idea i heard was to open up the servers for a small period of time to non-subscribers on set days of the week and then set it back to subs only.

I'd also like to see BW host a load of tournaments and events (esp. JK2 cos the JK2 community is screaming out for tournaments)

I used to play on the BW FFA JK2 servers constantly before they went to subs. I payed up but since subs came in i havnt seen a single person on any BW JK2 server. Im not angry cos i still have hope that i might get some use out of my subscription. I think BW are gonna have to take some major action if things are gonna pick up, they cant just sit around passively like they are now.

The only way i have seen is they added this to the server name

cant see your server? see our webby

Also, i see GAME mentioned in something to do with a price reduction, cant GAME advertise in store or give out a leaflet with every computer game they sell?

For the record, I agree with all of the above.

When I am off work I shall wander around naked, save for a large plastic smiley protecting my nether regions, and 'www.Barrysworld.com' written across my buttocks in lipstick.

That'll learn them!

I think we ought to have a very small number of servers, maybe one per game, with small player limits, ie 12/14 open for public use to tempt them in.

I also think GAME should tempt people with *buy a game get 6 months online gaming FREEEEEEEE*

etc.

We had a conversation along these lines on my clan irc channel when BW went P2P...

OK so they may get a bunch of subscribers to begin with, but as the natural wastage of gamers occurs, (people get bored with a game, girlfriend forbids them to play, people get a life, outside gaming (it could happen)) who's going to replace them?

I only played on BW servers occasionally, so I haven't subscribed, BW offers me nothing other than this forum, to keep me amused, and I don't need a GAME card 'cos the discounts are better if you don't use the high street stores anyway.

Really P2P is probably, unfortunately, a last desperate attempt to make BW financially viable, and save it from going under (again?).

It's a real shame 'cos I like it here, and it's a good community, but until you have to pay everywhere, I'm sure people won't shell out the cash on the offchance it might be good. So in a years time when the subs are up for renewal, what happens, whats the long term strategy?

bummer hey?

Oh Summo, is the BF1942 server P2P, and can you pm me the ip, it's just possible that if it's good enough, it might just force me to shove this whole argument back up my ****. :p

Yes, it is P2P, and you won't be able to see it without subscribing.

However, I'd say it's deffo worth it just for that game alone, it's packed every night.

Even if bw stopped p2p tomorow the servers wouldnt pick up for some weeks, while people got used to it again, the one day free a week idea wouldnt have much effect..

True, but the idea of them handing out leaflets at game stores is good... even if they do something like, buy UT2003 (or any other multi-player game) & get a month free on the BW servers...

Apparently it's subscriber-only but last night I enjoyed a game and only later realised I'd fogotten to load my BarryLogon. :/ Guess it remembered my IP, or summat.

Server details are:

213.221.174.65:14567
213.221.174.65:14568

Both are detected by All-Seeing Eye and GameSpy.

Advertising in Game/EB is the obvious way to go. If you're already on the internet and au fait with internet gaming, you're likely going to already know (and have already made a decision about) Barrysworld. People newer to online gaming are likely to buy their games in either Game or EB, as they're the two major national chains, but there's no real current link between offline and online gaming. To put it another way - when a newbie buys a copy of Quake 3 etc, what are the chances he'll try it out (properly) online? What level of assistance is there for him to go through the process of downloading patches, finding/connecting to decent servers, etc?

Game needs to "package" BW like BT packaged Wireplay - ie 'this is GAME's way of helping you play games online with thousands of other GAME customers'.

BW should advertise by sponsoring a mass-streak by beautiful, big-titted naked women (falling out of the sky optional) with "VOTE BARRYSWORLD" tatooed across themselves.

If they can't see the server, then how would they see the server name?

Bringing BW closer to Game proberbly is the best thing they could do. However i'm in favour of Granny's idea also - I know it's virtually the same as Scooba's plan, however the presence of ladybumps kind of distinguishes it :D

As far as I'm aware these aren't actual full game servers and merely advertise themselves as such. They are visible to non-subscribers.

I agree with this (as I stated in another post) I don't see why Game can't advertise in-store through posters or leaflets about the P2P system, or even take out magazine ads in computer mags (PCG etc) to advertise BW.

It's not Barrysworld that's destroying the community, it's the tight fisted bastards who won't pay for a great service, and one they have use free for a long time.

Hey I think I found my sig :D

They're not stupid. As soon as BW P2P has got into a good motion (Behind the scenes), I bet you won't be able to go into any shopping centre in the UK without seeing BW on something.

I'm not enjoying anything i'm getting from my subscription right now thanks.

All these ideas of advertising in game or in town centres and what not cost money which, if i'm not mistaken, is the problem here. I'd be interested to find out how many people have actually subscribed now, i wouldnt be suprised if it was less than 100.

BW needed to have acted more quickly than they did, what with schools and universites up and running again a major chunk of the market has got other stuff to do now.

With every day that passes, it makes me wonder if BW are actually going to do anything at all?

How can advertising and publicising your own GSP in hundreds of your own stores cost more than a few printers wages?

I take it you do realise BW is owned by GAME/Electronics Boutique?

exactly bigbb, so why hasnt thing been done?

you arent gonna attract current gamers to the community, as they can get free servers anywhere. BW need to target the 'new to gaming' type of person, in the hope that they like the communty, and pay, without fully realising the alternatives. Kinda flood the market, a la AOL, make it seem the family choice

"you buy the games from us, now play the games with us"

tbh i think if something isnt done soon, then BW will be finished, again.

I don't think its BW's fault per say, since they are merely a puppet wielded by EB Media Ltd now (no offence intended).

The problem I believe is typical of a lot of corporate entities that are not rooted in the Internet, ran by people who've just basically jumped on the "Internat services" bandwagon. BW is a radical company by most traditional corporate standards, both DBs, Ted, etc all have a primary grounding in the Internet, how fast things move, trends etc.

Contrast that with a traditional company - things do get done, just painfully slowly. All the usual rigour of board meetings, market penetration analysis, management strategy, etc has to all get done before someone decides if they want 1 or 2 lumps of sugar in their coffee.

BW advertising will happen, but if EB Media's timescales are anything to go by I wouldn't expect to see them in GAME until the year 2004.

Well plans are going ahead, this week CS volunteers are going to stand outside their local GAME stores wearing big BW sandwhich boards. And even better, we will all be completly naked under the boards.

The start of the academic year usually corresponds with a massive surge in online gamers - mainly because a vast number of people now have access to free broadband.
