Can anyone give me some tips on the best way to stay alive when venturing into low sec space for missons etc? I got warp jammed on my hurricane despite having 2 warp core stabilizers fitted..... how can i avoid getting ganked by people with massive amounts of skill points more than me? (IE: stay alive long enough to run like buggery)

At the moment it justs seems to be finding the empty systems to rat or misson in.

Or are there any other good sources of cash that are "safe" and involve making stuff splode?

Low sec - get a scout and make sure they are your friend. Or get a second account so you can scan gates and sit hidden off them. Otherwise stay out.

Making ISK - learn to run missions and run them well. I think there is a links page in this section that explains it well.

Mission running gets a decent income.

You need a scout, either a friend or a 2nd account as Sharkith says

Safest solo thing is level 4 mission running in a one-man corp (to avoid npc tax), just swap corps if wardecced

Sharkith: back to daoc?

Safest way thru low sec - cloaked ship that can warp cloaked.

That's probably not an option for you mate if you have low sp.

Next safest thing - don't bother with low sec ;)

(what I hear you cry?)

it's simple - look for a corp with 0.0 space and who want new pilots to train

Apply and join that corp then rat in 0,0 in safe space - much safer than trying to mission or rat around low sec hubs

Most decent pirates sit with remote boosted heavy interdictors. Putting it bluntly, no amount of warp core stabs will save you and they will instalock you. They got my assault frigate the other day when I thought I could sneak through :)

It's wierd but generally speaking 0,0 is easier and safer to rat and mission in than low sec :D

you can't.

if a heavy dictor gets a lock on you its 9 times out of 10 game over no matter how many skillpoints you have if he and his mates knows what they are doing.

as explained above, either get a mate to help scout or get a second account to scout with.

and ALWAYS have the local tab open, as soon as someone new pops up in local check his details and see if he got negative standing, if he has then you bet he's after easy kills and you better be on your way to a safespot to log off or a station you can camp in.

one way to make it slightly harder for them (but for you aswell) is to fit close range weapons when you pve, most pirates fly t2 cruisers with close range weapons because they know that most ppl that pve use long range.

its more risky for you aswell but atleast you can hit the pirates if you get caught.

i was using nothing but close range weapons when i was ratting and it worked out ok, usually they bailed when they saw i could hurt them because usually they arent fitted for tanking much.

and again, ALWAYS have the local chat tab open :)

Other things to do when ratting..

1. Stay aligned. Go to belt @ 50 (never 0), align to celestial, start firing off guns etc. Local hops - hit warp and make a bookmark mid warp. land at planet, warp back to midspot safe - voilla safespot!

2. Use the ship scanner. Get used to periodically scanning for items. Order results alphabetically. If you see combat probes on scanner GTFO. Just align and warp. You normally have around 60 seconds max once probes are within your scan range to gtfo before the pain train comes calling.

3. Cloaks. If you can fit them. You will be smacked by "pirates" for using them but it helps - get to safespot, cloak up. You can't be probed, you can't be scanned out and you can go get a cup of tea whilst the pirate emorages in local at you.

4. Travelling - try not to travel directly to gates in low sec. Always warp to a belt or planet near your outgate if there's pirates in system. That way you can normally avoid jokers who sit 3km out from gates with smartbombs active. (you won't believe how many people lose shuttles and pods to smartbombing pirates)

Finally..

use the map statistics. when travelling thru low sec always look at map statistics like pilots in space in the last 30 minutes.
ships destroyed, pods destroyed. It doesn't stop you losing stuff but it helps.

I got done the other day - scouted system all clear. Jumped in hauler and 3 ships decloaked on the gate. That cost me some fighters but nothing else

safespots, i dont quite trust them anymore.

if the pirate has probes they WILL find you...

i'd go for both cloaks and safespots., or just cloaks, but never just safespots.

I thought the thing to do was multiple safe spots and warp between them until you could logoffski (if they are persistent) or just until they got bored - or have things changed?

Obviously safe spot and cloak is simpler if you've the spec for it.

As long as you have not returned fire or taken a hostile action you can logoffski more or less as soon as you land in the safespot.

One way aggression no longer activates the aggression timer. So as long as you haven't done anything aggressive just gtfo and log :)

simpler than all of this is just getting out of empire. Empire is so full of idiots and wannabepvpers that it's not as safe as properly secured space

Well you might not want to log so the warping between safe spots should keep them busy ;). Just don't warp to them at 0 every time and don't go round the same order.

Definetely. The majority of the lowsec pirates aren't 0.0 schooled - I used to wait for them to step out in the wilderness (read, 0.0), and whack em about the head.

The second they have to do _real_ fighting, they will bail. To that effect, 0.0 is more secure due to its vastness, and due to the fact that for someone to come investigate a 1 man blip on the map when there's more activity elsewhere, is too much of a hassle.

Well, I never knew that if you are doing level 4 missions in low sec, that people could warp to your deadspace encounter. 5 pirates warped to me whilst I had the agrro of about 8 Battleships. Still took 2 of the pirates out though before they wasted me. Plus my domi fit was purely a mission runner so there was nothing of any value on it, but what they lost in isk was over 100m. Fail pirates.

still risky, if you jump around long enough theres a big chance that they can pinpoint the safespots.

takes some work that most pirates just cant be arsed with but still...

Well, we got the pirates back last night. Me in my domi and my RL mate in his command ship. Used locater agent to find them, I warped to asteroid belt and just waited. Sure enough 6 of them warped to me except this time, I was fitted out for PvP. 2 dicters, an interceptor, 2 BS and a probe ship. Id already killed a dicter and interceptor before my mate turns up. Both BS warp scrambled, probe ship and second dicter dead before could warp away. Left the 2 BS till last. Convo'd the leader and asked for 100m or we would kill them and pod them. He paid but we killed them and podded them anyway :D I love EVE!

I never though an mmorpg could beat the rush of a DAoC 8 v 8, but i was wrong. I find fleet battles more of a rush, especially when you are out numbered.

Eve had something that DAoC never really gave me after the first couple of runs to Emain in OF - the anticipation. Hunting people down and trying to lay traps bought a buzz all of it's own prior to comabt. Rather enjoyable really and I do miss it. The combat had it's own excitment too as you tried not to get your pride and joy blown up as you calculated your ISK risk while trying to inflict maximum damage on them (or not for me as I took to flying damp boats so I did bugger all dps).
