This is just my suggestion of how you make a decent auction. It's based on the system the players of the SWG play community had.
The main reason to hold an auction is that you might sell a specific item for more than it's actual market value.
The main reason to bid in an auction is that you might buy an item for less than it's actual market value.
Putting an auction up saying "blablabla, gifv offers - I will sell when I find the price suitabel." is imo not the right way to do it to classify it as an auction. Of course it's valid method and it works, but by doing it this way you completely negate the advantage and reason of being the bidder.
So when doing an auction it's the best idea to put your min. bid below market value, and the buyout above.
When setting up an auction you should include the following:
End time and date
Min. bid on each item, and buyout
In SWG we usually named each item a 'lot'. So if your selling 3 items they would appear as 'Lot 1' 'Lot 2' 'Lot3'.
This method is recommended if your planning to auction a larger number of items.
Min. bid increasements.
Sniper rules, in short 15 mins has to pass after the last bid before the auction ends, this is to avoid people from posting the last second of the auction.
Ingame contact or not. The auction holder should specify whenever ingame bids are allowed. My personal best experience is that all bids are posted on the forum, however ingame buyouts are allowed. The auction holder can state that he is willingly to accept BO offers ingame, including items instead of the designated plat price.

Once you've started an auction, rolled the dice - There is NO turning back, you commit to the auction and accept that some of your items might sell below the market value, that's the risk of doing an auction.
An auction could look like this:
This auction ends at January 5th 2005 8pm GMT - 15 min sniper rule apply.
Lot 1 - Astral Conflagrant Shortsword. Min bid 15p BO 60p
Lot 2 - Astral Plauguebringer. Min bid 15p BO 60p
Lot 3 - Necklace of Rapture. Min bid 5p BO 20p
Lot 4 - Crystalized Vest of Reveries. Min bid 5p BO 25p
Lot 5 - Immolated Ring. Min bid 10p BO 25p
Min increasement: 1p.
You are welcome to contact me ingame on Khainai about BO offers, items or plats.
