...or my l33t skillz if you prefer
smile.gif

Anyway, i've been playing Q2 online for just over a year, and over the last few months my lack of skills in certain areas has become rather obvious, so i'm looking for some tips from people as to how to improve.

The three areas i want to improve the most are:
1) Railgun skills (as a HPW)
2) Grappling skills (esp. when trying to take a flag in CTF)
3) One-on-One duelling.

Any tips gratefully accepted.

MMM not sure how to help...it's all about learning what people do the most when your facing them.
Railing. As a HPB, I try to wait for the jump points. I.e. everyone normally jumps, as soon as they jump, you pretty much know where theyre gonna land. Hey presto, frag those bad boys. Might be worth changing your sensitivity. I used to have a sensitivity of 17, now I've brought it down to 6.5. Much more accurate. If you can play at a resolution like 960 also helps, if u cant dont worry.
Grapple...thats harder for HPBs. Practice one time by unbinding your forward key and rely on the grapple only to move till it comes natural. Try and confuse the enemy by firing your grapple constanty changing directions, and seek cover when poss, but above all its practice.
Duel, listen to the sounds. Rail/Rox/Chain is best for most maps like DM1. Make the Megahealth yours. Also everyone uses timers for weps, armour, Quad and PS just to help out.
Hope that may help a little

Hi Dev m8!

1) RailGun; lead targets, wait for them to jump (you can always ALWAYS spot the peeps who play a lot of 1 on 1 RA2 because they NEVER jump when duelling with RG's); as a HPB it's a bit of a hit/miss/maybe weapon as far as I was concerned (although people like [SR]Bob made me think that possibly it was a skill thing

)

2) Grapple; Watch demo's (BStealer demo's from www.clanbase.com, and anything by bYc-Che or Fluffy[NKVD]. As mentioned above try navigating a level by grapple alone...

3) 1 on 1 - erm. dunno I am particularly "pants" at anything apart from 1 on 1 RA2 using RG's only...and just DON'T JUMP - EVER.

Thanks for the tips ppl

The two tips which i think are the ones i'll try first are the moving around a map using just the grapple, and watching for/not jumping. They're pretty obvious when you think about it (doh!

)

The idea of lowering my mouse sensitivity is something i find quite interesting. I personally play with a sensitivity of 14 (i think), but i may well try lowering it to around 10, just as an experiment. Anyone have different sensitivities for different weapons ?

-Yeah on the subject of railgunning skills, as far as I'm concerned, if you are a HPB give up.

-CTF, yep good idea with the grappling hook, I h8 it though but yeah that is how I learnt to use it.

-1vs1 ahhh this is where I can help. For each map try and use what you belive is the best weapon, don't just ue the same weapon for all of the maps.
I use the:
Grenade laucnher for DM1
BFG or Supershotgun for DM2
Hyperblaster for DM3
BFG or Rocket launcher for DM4
Chaingun for DM5
BFG, Railgun or Rocket laucnher for DM6
Supershotgun for DM7
Rocket laucnher for DM8
-I find these weapons work best and also if you use them it would help you to use them in case you only had that weapon.

-On warm-up play really pants to make your opponent overconfident, never play like you intend do in the game in case they are a tactical play (like me).

-Try to make a route on a level and stick to it for half of the game but deviate from the route enough to stop your opponent from learning it. Have about 2 routes figured out and switch between them during the game to add a bit of suprise to your competitor's rear end.

-Only jump around franticaly if the person your against is not using the railgun.

-Finally if someone pulls out a chaingun leg it and set a trap for them, retreat any time your health is low enough to die in one shot from and re-juvinate before attempting to re-attack. Most importantly of all be UNPREDICATABLE. CHEERS PSycho

Hey dev,

I have found as a lpb using a sensitivity of 3.5 or 4.5 is good enough and my fov is 95.

This works for me and hope it helps you on your way.

Yeah on the subject of railgunning skills, as far as I'm concerned, if you are a HPB give up

Contrary to popular beleif, HPB's can be very effective/skillful with a RG.
I only play CTF and I've noticed you Dev around a bit. You look a good player.

It basically takes practice - take heed of what the others have said regarding leading the target and jumping. Another tip is to learn the resources of a map - you then will have a good idea of where someone may be heading, making it easier to lead your target with more accuracy.

As someone suggested using just a grapple to learn how to grapple, use the RG as your main weap to learn how to use it. That is what I do - use the RG for most of the time, but occaisionally I have a need for the RL (e.g. defending ctf2 on my own :/)

Again, thanks for more of the tips

It looks as though having a lower sensitivity for RG is the way to go, something to try out soon i think. I was also always aware that i should try to randomise how i play a little, but thats now another thing i'll look at more closely.

I now think that the fundamental problem is consistency rather than a lack of specific skills (though there are still deficiencies here). I can play acceptably one match, but the next match look as though a dead chicken has taken over the controls. Though i think consistency is something many players are aiming for. And i think the only way to improve is to play more CTF. Oh what a shame

Refreshing to see people being helpful again rather than l33t tw4ts like most of the scene has become.
