with adsl its digital so you should get maximum speed from it all the time providing your adapter is working correctly (or windows see's a problem with it)

There's your problem, someone on Freeserve is bound to have tried it earlier and Freeserve uses a fairly extensive Web Cache IIRC, so you were getting it from the Cache.

I may be wrong on this tho
