the system

GA-6VXD7 gigabyte dual socket motherboard
2x 1gig intel p3
512mb pc 100 RAM
sb audigy player
geforce 4 ti4600
10/100 lan
etc

the problem

i want more power and i cant afford a new mother board and cpu's !!!!
how can i overclock both the pIII's with the dual processor setup?
i already have plans to cool the system down more, so im aware that heat is an issue whe overclocking, but i have little idea what needs to be done as they are old cpu's and the software clockers are only designed for single cpu setup. any assistance would be great

The most common way is the increase the Front Side Bus(FSB) although most dual mobos just aren't designed with overclocking in mind so you might have trouble getting to any significant level.

and you said you couldnt afford a new motherboard and CPUs does that mean your planning on buying anouther duel processr setup?

If so thats why it will costs a bundle.... if you didnt mean that ignore :D

k, im very skint so im unable to buy anything. i spent most of my savings a couple of years ago on this setup. i wouldnt mind rebuilding a new system but its unlikely to happen without winning the lottery or something! embattle, thanks for the fsb mention,iv heard bout this but have no idea how to do this, i can build a pc but have no idea what the process of increasing the fsb entails.

suggestions please keep them coming

On your particular motherboard you have to change a DIP switch and with such adjustments you can manage a FSB, above the standard 133Mhz, of 142/152Mhz.

I have to be honest and say that I don't believe you'll find it that easy to get it going at a higher FSB. Even if you do manage it, I doubt you'll get much of a return on performance.

it may even be a smart idea to sell your mobo, cpus and ram as package, then together with a little bit of dosh you can get a cheepish amd cpu, mobo and 256meg stick. overall you'll be faster and as a bonus you won't have had to cough up too much cash.

how much could i sell the 2 processors and mobo with 512mb for??? tis all old and i would have thought that there is little demand (if thats the correct phrase!) for dual p3's. oh and skint means eating bread and drinking water, i have no money to add to this supposed possible amd! im so ashamed!!!!

still back to the fsb thing, how do i get to that????or is my giga byte mainboard being a pain in the butt. thanks for the suggestion though on the selling point ( are you interested? :) ) but i think i'll have to stick with what i got

Dual P3s might still have some value to someone running a server surely?

P3s are, by my understanding still very respectable? And 512 would be a good amount of RAM for a "small" server based on older kit.

You might well get a good price for it.

If I were you, work out how much you'll need for the new set up, then work out whether you can get away charging that much for your dual block....

really guys, if i had a decent offer i probably would. i actually have 1024 mb ram, but was gunna sell 512 to a mate that has very lil. if i sold that at the same time with the rest of the sys instead, it would be a better server set.

the problem is its not just my gaming system its also myworking pc, (being a damn student) if i could garentee the money i would either need to get the money up front to build the new sys then send the old sys, or sell it to somone i can garentee will give me the money after. and i dont know anyone whos honest enough or trusting enough to accomodate for either!

plus how the hell do you install a new motherboead and drivers without reformatting cos i have a hel of a lot of set up that i dont want to have to re do!

right got that, now i will appologise cos im dyslexic and ask what this means! sw1 and sw2 relate to what? are they indevidual cpu set up or is the right combination required to allow it all to work on both? sorry im so dumb!

Switch 1 is for FSB speed
Switch 2 is the multiplier

they are for both CPUs you cant run 1 CPU at one speed and 1 at another

i kinda got the idea that both were needed to be the same frequency, just didnt know if the first controlled cpu 1 and the second cpu2

so what does the multiplier controle? if fsb is the bus rating ie 133, by opening the buss further and increacing the multiplier in increments, would that give them a higher clock speed? i amy not eve do it but im real entreagued now!
