It isn't nuts, this test is just a gimmick though where you can cheat all you want ( turn up the volume). In a proper hearing test they map out for each frequency what volume you need a tone to be, to be able to hear it and thus how much (if any) hearing loss you have.
In your case you might have some for their middle range.
A lot of MP3 tracks leave out all of the sounds with 16Khz freq or higher, so that might explain why you could still hear those tones.

this is interesting because i can generally hear high pitched stuff fine, its lower pitched noises (like people voices) I usually don't hear

I have a similar problem - i have under 50% of the normal hearing range in one ear, so basically can't hear people if they're sat on my left or speaking at a low pitch...

Sat the formal test years back and can't remember numbers.

It's strange though,
Being a parrent, I've noticed a disturbing tendancy,
sometimes my Hearing goes 100% it's as if I can see thier lips
moving yet, I cant hear a word!!
