It isn't nuts, this test is just a gimmick though where you can cheat all you want ( turn up the volume). In a proper hearing test they map out for each frequency what volume you need a tone to be, to be able to hear it and thus how much (if any) hearing loss you have.
In your case you might have some for their middle range.
A lot of MP3 tracks leave out all of the sounds with 16Khz freq or higher, so that might explain why you could still hear those tones.
