Excellent news, I'm glad people were able to see sense and allow her to do as she wishes.

Ditto. Glad to see common sense prevailing over the "OMG SHE CAN'T DIE WE ALL KNOW BETTAR THAN HER! LIFE IS SO PWECIOUS" brigade of right-to-life wankers.

I'm glad she gets to do what she wishes.
And Kenny, to me it isn't the choice that blows my mind, it's the actions of others that will stem from this one decision.

She's said she doesn't want to do it herself, so it'll probably be a sympathetic doctor or a family member.

ooohhhhhh well that would be nice a family member, should give a nice guilt trip :(
I know that you would end alot of pain but if a family member would do it there will always be some guilt, let a docter do it

multiple answers :

Kenny - anyone can choose when they want to die... you can choose to o/d or jump off something really high etc...

Mr.Blackshirt - it would be pretty hard for her to do it herself considering she's paralysed from the neck down... A doctor will more than likely have the shitty task of switching the machine off...

Throd - you're gonna have to deal with it sooner or later m8 ;)

Not really. If she has made it 100% clear that she doesn't want to live as she's in too much pain and has virtually no chance of recovery then if she asked me (if I was a family member, say her son) to do it, I would. It's the kindest thing to do and if the family member really loved her they would respect her wishes and end her pain.

I agree a family member would do it. But fact is there will most likely be guilt, perhaps not at the moment but what in 5 years? Thats why i say never let a family member do it. Also its a bit selfish to ask a family member to do it, its your choice so dont put presure on your family

thats good news - it's common sense if she's well minded enough to make that decision for herself. Would be really freaky tho to just decide when to do it tho

My dads got the same disease as her(Motor Neuron's)he's ok at the moment but he's lost feeling in his left hand, he's pretty active and stuff and i know it would destroy his mind if he was left to rot in a hospital bed, an excellent decision today, maybe i will have that decision one day and not some one else who doesn't know or love my dad.Congrats for once to the English Justice System.

haven't got a problem with people saying I dont want to rot in bed or have immense pain the rest of my life. I have a problem with people putting the responsibility with family. Alsoh i feel that the decision to end your life has to be careful, if a break through is expected i say let people suffer a bit more, caus life is precious to the ones that love you. This does sound selfish but its more about how hopeless a situation is then the feelings.

Tremor have feelings for ya, sometimes this life can be a fucked up, take care

Hmmm like me dad sez, knowing his luck the minute we pull the plug there will be a miracle cure for his illness.Life does indeed suck, i wouldn't want to be without it though, not for a second.

The thing is with this disease it eventually suffocates you because the neurons stop telling your brain to tell your lungs to breathe(dont quote me on this though), David Niven died of this and i cant remember his actual words, but they were something like "prey you never get this".There is a point we must remember in this and that is it's ultimately(imo)down to the lady in question and her family.

tbh thats the part I have problems with. Who can you trust to kill somebody? Sounds stupid I know but we've seen what that doctor (Harold Shipman?) did without being "allowed" so to speak, so imagine what could happen to people who are essentially given the legal power to kill.

Good point but they would only be given the legal right in this case, it isn't like they are being given a permit for it.It's a very complicated matter with many views associated with it, its kinda hard to get your head around it all.God help me if it ever comes to this with me dear old dad:(

The point of the case was that she wanted her husband to help her.
It isn't the British legal system, its the Euro courts.
I'm so glad that at last this has been allowed, when a pet can no longer live life to the full or is suffering we don't think twice about putting it out of it's misery. Why should it be then that we treat humans differently?
It's about quality of life, not quantity.
