Horrible

While touring the News section BBC's website I came across a bit about the possible stoning, rock kind, of a woman in Nigeria. I followed a link and ended up at a website covering Sharia Law and the different issues involved. I then followed a link regarding the practice of Stoning people to death and read with interest but they have actual footage of 4 people being stoned to death and having watched it I found it rather horrifying that such practices are allowed yet seemingly denied.

Interesting website, I'll have to to go over that one.

Shari'a Law is one of the stumbling blocks of Islam, the biggest problem has been its implementation as many muslim countries have vastly different interpretations on how it should be done, to what level of authority it effects, and whether it can be revised.

It should be noted that not all muslim countries promote Shari'a (Turkey), many treat it separately from mainstream politics (Iraq, Syria, Jordan) and of those that do embrace it not all are fanatical about it (Morocco).

On the other hand there are those who practice puritanical forms of the Shari'a interpretation (Saudi, Iran), it should be mentioned that the Nigerian issue is in a country split 50/50 between Islam and Christianity, in which case you will find the more extreme examples of both religions.

From the website:

What makes this hideous crime even more abhorrent is that it is carried out under the name of Islam. The Quran and the Prophet of Islam despised such behavior. On the contrary, in the Quran and the Prophet's traditions, such barbarism is denounced. The Prophet did his utmost to eradicate backward traditions, including stoning, which victimized women.

Well:

Article 104 of the Law of Hodoud provides that the stones should not be so large that a person dies after being hit with two of them, nor so small as to be defined as pebbles, but must cause severe injury. This makes it clear that the purpose of stoning is to inflict grievous pain on the victim, in a process leading to his or her slow death.

All religion should be banned if you ask me, cos the world would be a far less violent place without it.
