I'm on ADSL through BTOPENWORLD. This is what I know...

You must be WITHIN 3.4 km of a main exchange...

There are teething problems but I get an average 40 ping

...and its 150 quid installation, 40 squid a month...

register as a business for preferential treatment...

That's all... but hey... it's sommit!

RED getting ADSL through homechoice is a cheap and very crap way to get it.

Thanks for replys guys.

But how exactly? Difficulty in connecting, staying connected, tech support (I already know this is supposed to be crap!), ping, d/l speed?

I don't even mind if it doesn't ping so good, £20 for 24/7 access/ month is a good rate anyway. Beats 4p/min daytime rate I have to pay now in a great situation as an ex C&W ntl customer. I was just wondering if I should start getting excited about the ping or not.

Cheers,

Homechoice aDSL will be crap because:

1. It's not their core business.
2. 115k is peanuts on DSL
3. DSL is ruled by BT. (Read crap)
4. The contention ratio for the internet bit of the HC Dsl will be huge.

Yeah but BT: £150 + £40/m

HC: £40+£20/m

I don't care about d/l speed, I am an old school internet user (my old uni was JANET for the South of England and when I used the net for the first time at somebody's house as opposed to uni I wondered why it was so slow. Lol, If I had known in 4 years time I would still be on 56k I would have moved to the US right then ;) ) and basically the reason I am stating all this is that I am all pronned out :D so I don't care about d/l speed any more :D

I know some people don't care about the money but for me unfortunately at this time it is a critical difference.

Cheers though guys. One of my mates in W London has it and I told him to do a DOS ping to http://www.demon.net in the daytime and he got 70. I could live with that :)

Thanks again.

No point ADSL gaming

The networks aren't reliable enough, there is no way of finding out about the sort of wiring hooked up to your local exchange, and the modems are rent only :-< personaly, I'd wait about three years (I kid you, no) unitl they figure out how to do simultainious sattelite upload/ download. And for 5 meg, that they say'll go up to about a gig, I think its worth the wait.
If you are rolling in it, and you live in an inner city area, I'd recommend an OC12 line. okay, so its a grand a month, but I've heard stories of these things serving an entire office block, and still being able to pump out video conferencing at 24 fps.

Its 115k cos if you read the small print, your PC connects to the HC set top box via a serial port lol :D

Sats are major crap for gaming as well..since the latency is very high.

I'm sure OC-12 is more than a grand a month.

Errrrrm...you're a twat. OC12 is 644MBps connection. That could service half of the UK, let alone an office block. And it would also cost a tad over 1000 a month, try closer to 150,000 a month just for rental.

It's so true what they say...a little bit of knowledge is a dangerous thing

Just a FYI post

Okay so I got it... and it rocks. 9k/s on Napster, 70 ping to demon and to be honest, I am blown away by the TV (which I thought Iwouldn't use). It has music videos on demand (yeah yeah I know, The Box) but you can ff, rew and pause the stuff.

Only a couple of points against though, install was a bit dodgy (i.e I knew more than the engineer :\ and I don;t exactly know a lot) and the TV is not yet Nicam - but they are working on it apparently.

I might be singing a different tune come my first problems (which I expect won't be long) but for now I give it an A+.

Try OC768 at a nice 10 Tbps...that's 10 trillion bits per second folks. You can buy it from Enkido...in germany :/

So does that inlcude installation or is that extra?
Also is that 1.5M bits or bytes for the T1?

now all I need is to find 170 people who live near me, and I'll sell em a connection for 40/month, just connect them to a machine in my house through a LAN and Ill be have a top connection and make a bit of money
Sounds like a plan,
