Not too sure what U are trying to do here:

are you:

1) Trying to use 2 modems to network the machines or..
2) Trying to share your internet connection

Please clarify

You would normally use 2 NICs connected to a modem router which I don't think you'll find any where since the min seems to be ISDN routed :)

I'm trying to use this same phone line they are connected to, to work as like a serial port wire, if you know what i mean, so that I can use one as a host and connect to it via the two modems.

I just want to share printer and stuff.

OK, I'll tell you in as much detail as I can...

I have a pc upstairs, running Win98. It is connected to a household phone line, via a modem.

I also have a pc downstairs, running Win2000. It is also connected to the same phoneline, via a seperate modem.

What I want to do is link these two computers together via this phone line, so they become a network, e.g. I can play a LAN game or Print a file from the comp upstairs to printer downstairs.

I haven't a clue on how to do this though... I have been searching on internet for nearly 6 hours, but I am having no luck finding an answer, they usualy just say buy a LAN kit, which I can't afford, or tell me how to dial up to an outside lan, which I know how to do but has nothing to do with my problem.

Does that help?

a home phone line ay? with a vox or something? like if you dial 2, you call the upatairs phone? cos if you had that, you'd just might be able to dial in to yourself, otherwise I don't think it can be done unless you happen to have a loooong serial line [and believe me that sux]
:)
why not get some lan kit? two nic's and some coax can't set you back more than 30 or 40 squid, and a hub and some cat5 to go with that can't make it more than 50.

HOMELINK PHONELINE PCI NTWK IN THE BOX 2PK
The Linksys HomeLink Phoneline Network Card offers instant connectivity to multiple PC's over a home's existing telephone lines. You can network any computer by connecting it to any telephone jack in your wall. The network runs on standard homegrade telephone wires just like the ones you use everyday so there’s no extra hardware to buy.

However, this costs money though, such is life.

Which is specifically why I want to network with stuff I have, I simply can't afford network cards etc... I just have 2 PC's 1 phone line and 2 modems.

I don't want solutions on USB adapters etc... just what I have already.

Is there anyway that my modem can dial the other modem on the same phone line?

"Is there anyway that my modem can dial the other modem on the same phone line?"

AFAIK no unless you use a PABX (or similar) system. Also if a method does exist [pretty sure it doesn't] using your modem(s) is going to be a *very* slow method of networking the two computers together in comparison to a couple of cheap lan cards.

If you can dial one computer from the other you might be able to use dial up networking to establish a TCP/IP connection between the two in a method similar to the DCC tool that comes with windoze.

But you'll have a lot less grief if you buy two cheap ethernet cards and some twisted pair cable: look around you'll prolly find them for < £20

To be honest then, you need to stop worrying about networking your PCs and get a job

I have a job, but I am also at college with a car, I'm not arsed about speed of network, adn I've just had to fork out 600 quid on tax and repairs on my car, so I will have no money for the nest few weeks, not that my financial situation is any of your fucking business.

Hmmm no you can't network with out spending a little money...sorry :)

It would cost about £50 to buy two network cards and some RJ45 cable.

If you but from http://www.dabs.com you can get the Netgear FA311 10/100 2000 PCI for about £15 each and then its just over £20 for 20 metres, its normally about a pound a metre.

And no, there will be no flame war... I don't think any of us are that immature.

.....I'm waiting :)

you can get NiC's for about £10 each as well...

Just remember if you're going to directly connect the 2 NiC's that you need a cross-over cable, rather than a standard one.

I rekon £40 for a homenetwork solution is pretty good going.

Crossover cables work a treat, great rates and no setup necessary really. Got one atm but might need a hub if I add a 3rd box :)
