So I've been brewing ale in my cupboard this term at uni. It hasn't come out great because I don't know what the hell I'm doing but I have like 25 litres of free ale now so it doesn't reallly matter that it doesn't taste good :D Once I've drunk this batch I'm planning on trying to brew something else; I'm thinking maybe mead (although if I do that I'm gonna have to buy a drinking horn to drink it out of viking.gif).

Anyone got any tips to help me out? Or stories or ideas or whatever pliz

water, suger, yeast, in a plastic bucket with lid. let it ferment for a while, buy a copper tube bend it circular, use a immersion heater to get the booze out into a bottle. :) done right you get really nice booze.

Mead is tricky to get tasting nice. Fruit wines are a lot easier to do but it isn't really the time of year for freebies. I usually make some bramble & elderberry and rosehip wine in the autumn. Lots of recipes online.

Also, distilling is illegal in the UK. ;)

I used to buy ready made tins (for brewing beer). Just add (boiling) water and sugar and basically you're done. Also a 25L. I broke "the bottle" last winter though. Left water in it and it froze (duh).

Ofcourse the tins arent as good as brewing everything yourself, but you can experiment with the sugars (brown sugar, sugarcane, honey, appels, etc). Also adding more sugar to get more alcohol in. Don't overdo the latter though. Too much sugar will make your brew undrinkable.

Also control yourself and leave it standing for the appropriate amount of time. The longer you wait the better it gets usually.

As far as story's go. The last brew I made I thought failed. Drank most of it, but I didnt really like it. Left 1 crate

and a couple of 2L bottles standing.

A friend of mine came by some time later (a month or 2) and took one of the 2L bottles. Day's later he told me he enjoyed it and he got really drunk of it, so I tried once more and it really whas a lot better.

Btw use the Grolsch beugel fles. Real handy when it comes to brewing yourself.

I made some in the winter but couldn't get it warm enough so it didn't turn out great. I am planning on making some again as I have recently got around to getting a heat pad to put the fermenting bucket on. I will be making various wines too this year, I have a small stone barn in the garden which I will be converting into a workshop so there will be room in there.

I haven't left this stuff for the amount of time I was supposed to yet, but I couldn't resist drinking it today. There's definitely some alcohol in there lol! I think it's ok tthat I'm a little drunk at 5:48pm though since it's my birthday.. right? right?

I have the ale in a pressure barrel atm, however there seems to be no pressure in it (lol). I have some CO2 cylinders and I released one into it today but it doesn't seem to have effected it much. The tap is near the top of the barrel so I have to tip it to the side to pour stuff out.

I'm still interested in making mead for my next batch, partly because me and my friends wanted to do it when we were younger (and my friends were still metal :p) but we never got round to it. It will probably end up tasting like shit though, I'll have to start researching it online.
