Can anyone recommend a good place to go for a two week holiday abroad that involves sun, sea, plenty of activities, and lots of historical stuff to go visit that isn't too expensive and or full of British chavs spreading their diseased seed in a drunken orgy?

Recommendations of where not to go and why are also welcome.

Portugal sounds ideal.
Lots of little historic villages/towns/castles/forts off the beaten track.
Admittidly there are some chavvy areas but on the whole its very nice.

doesn't have a lot of beaches. but if you do get out on a boat there's amazing swimming, snorkling, diving. Also some of the biggest sharks in the Med ahem ;)

For my own idea, Corsica, though that's beach poor too. Food makes up for it though :)

Dont go to the moon, its made of cheese you know!

but I like cheese.

I like the idea of Rome but I get the impression it could be expensive. I used to go to Spain a lot when I was younger but I'm guessing it's become the Chav destination of the world by now?

Corsica is v.nice but also expensive and actually quite difficult to get to.

Croatia is nice. Going there end of next week. Also Cyprus is good so long as you avoid Agia Napa and Paphos. I'd also recommend the nice bits of Spain, of which there are loads; I'd particularly recommend The Seville/Jerez/Cadiz area, loads of history bits, awesome food, and Tarifa is really good; more surfy types than beach chavs (can get a bit windy though).

I suggest the Island of Capri just off the Italian coast near Naples - famous for its beauty and the number of artists on the Island but its not cheap :)

Combine it with hydrofoil trips to the mainland to see Pompeii and Herculaneum (and even Naples museum if you dont mind cities) or just laze and watch the guys catching little Octopii on the piers...

Edit - dont go in August tho - all the northern italians head south in August for their holidays.

My girlfriend has been to Bulgaria - she rates it. It has most of what your looking for and a distinct lack of Brits.

I went to bulgaria two years ago, keep away from the resorty places - they are shite and not cheap at all. Go *near* one (coast near Varna is alright) and enjoy the cheapness and local hotties. We met some swedish birds on a trip and spent an evening entertaining them and getting fucked up, shame they werny up for some naughtiness after :(

i went there last year to sunny beach. its like being in the truman show, one of the group said. once youre in the resort there is no where to go except that area.
we also met swedish women on a bar crawl, we joined in on it and managed to blag the free drinks and club entrys.

i also found a pub selling pints for 30p. i went there on my own with a paper at 11am one day and arrived back trollyed sometime later.

we did get the bus to some city though, cost about 50p for an hours bus ride!

Some parts are lovely. But the sheer degree of poverty is diabolical and upsetting. As for Cancun, we found it to be the American 'Chav' central.

Very commercial, badly treated dolphins and sharks, trapped for tourism. Lots to do tho, really clean and lovely white sandy beaches.

The south of France is beautiful. Short flight

Nice is nice.

The Cotes d'Azure.( sp?)

Some lovely hill top villages, markets, lots of history, castles, culture.
Canne and Montreal.

Wasn't actually that expensive. Lovely place.

Cancun is horrid. Playa Del Carmen is ruined, Cozumel is expensive. Tulum, on the other hand, has the nicest beach in the world. But Mexico is too far away for just a week anyway.

Mexico is ruined by big fat americans and oddly when I went by lots of welsh people - its a horrid place and you soon realise the decent mexican food you like is actually from texas and that mexican food is on a par with brit food for awfulness :p
