Ok, I'm kind of confused. Not sure if I'm going to buy FFXI yet, but looking at some of the screenshot's I probably will. Anyways, I have a question...

Extra jobs. Like... WTF!?!? :p How exactly do these work. If, say, I made a human (hume, whatever) black mage, and chose summoner or something as an extra job (at level 18, ofc), could I get both skills to the same level? Or is there a set level to what I could get the extra job to? Hmmmm...

Oh, and one more thing... how many character's can you make at first? I heard about the '1$ extra per month for every character', so how many slots do you start off with at the beginning, without paying extra? Just the one? :p

Ok, first, to unlock the option to use sub-job's you need to do a quest.

Secondly, to unlock the summoner job you need to complete a lvl 30 quest.

Your sub-job is automatically set to 50% lvl of your main job, so if you are a lvl 18 BLM, your summoner (as a sub-job) could be a maximum of lvl 9.

HOWEVER, you never lose levels by changing job/sub-job, so, for example, if you had lvl 30 BLM and lvl 30 summoner, and you choose BLM as your main job, and summoner as your sub-job summoner will be set to lvl 15 summons.

This does not mean that you lose the lvl's on your summoner job, they are not affected this way and you still have a lvl 30 summoner level to draw upon if you set it as your main.

As for characters, the maximum is 16 i believe, each paid for separately ($5.45 ish for the first one, summit like $0.59 for additional characters).

You start with one char, but there really is no point in having more than one, you can only have characters on one server, and one char can max out all the jobs in the game.

On a side-note, Summoner as a sub-job for BLM is a poor choice, as your summons will be half the lvl of the mobs you fight and so will be almost ineffective.

First off, Summoner is an advanced job, that you have to complete a quest to be able to chose as job at around level 30ish. ( not sure if it was 30 or 33 ).

Second - a subjob is automatically temporarily capped at half the level as your main job, no matter how much experience you have in it. ( don't worry, you don't lose anything when switching jobs. )

You get one character slot, and since you can become everything with just one character ( if you have the time and money ) - you won't (really) need any extra slots apart from role-playing reasons or extra storage space :)
Any additional characters adds $1 / month to your expenses.

I'm considered an alt-maniac ( check my sig and triple it for alts below level 45 ), but I have 3 character slots atm, and might still cancel the third since I find no use for it whatsoever :) ( maybe will keep it open for role-playing reasons ).

$12.95 for the first one and $1.00 for additional ones.

The reason you see a lesser figure is that your free period doesn't end at the beginning of the month, thus your next payment is a fraction of the full monthly cost that will come next.

So, if I leveled up to 30 or whatever as a black mage, then chose summoning, could I make summoning my primary job, level that skill up to higher level, and then black mage or something else as a sub job?

Example.

Level black mage to 30.

Do Summoner flag quest.

Set Summoner as main job, black mage as sub job. >> You're now a level 1 summoner/level 1 black mage.

Once you've xp'd your summoner to 10, you'll be a level 10 summoner/ level 5 black mage.

at level 70 you'll be level 70 summoner/level 30 black mage, unless you at any time after going summ pick black mage as your main job and xp it up to atleast 35 ( from 30 ). ( you don't gain xp for the subjob ).

Ok, I get it now! :D I would ask something along the lines of... 'is the game worth buying?', but I'm sensing the answers would be slightly biased. :p

Depends what kind of player you are.

If your intention is to create a char to wtfpwn other players in something like daoc-RvR, then keep searching - this game isn't for you.

I play this game to relax, role play and get inspiration.

FFXI is really just another FF game in essence, except that instead of NPC's to put in your party, you use real players.

I find it a welcome break from the rvr uber-bollox that consumes DAoC nowadays, the NPC scripts are fun (The Star Onion Brigade S.O.B's intro still makes me chuckle, that and the tarutaru guard who calls you a "noobie-woobie" ;)), the whole atmosphere of the game is laid-back and even the movement is slow and fluid.

Best of all, it's an international game, so you get europeans, Americans and Japanese to group and chat with. For someone like myself who is desperately trying to learn Japanese its great :great:

Summoner sub job is a little hard to acquire first you need to get a ruby from leaches. This as we found over the weekend isn't as easy as you might think.

We spent about 5-6 hours (if not more) yesterday farming leaches outside qufim tower and not a single one dropped we even had a thf with us. Apparently its a 1% drop rate might try again tonight or might just sub rdm have to wait and see just how much patience I have.

Well, looking at all the options... I think I'm going to go either hume blackmage / whitemage, elvaan dark knight / samurai, or mithra ninja / rogue. Depends what mood I'm in when I get it. Now all I've got to do is go out and buy it...
