Cos I have all this black crap on the rubber seal - it looks like gunge and it looks like it would come off but no about of scraping and scrubbing has helped. It's been there since I moved in but it was never picked up on the inventory and I didn't really realise it could be a problem until it was too late.

Bastards'll charge me for it unless I remove it (well, maybe not but I've had landlords charge me more for much less in the past) -any idea what it is or how I get it off?

Buy a new seal. They don't cost much.

Cheers, I was thinking that...Are they easy to fit?

Normally yes, probably a couple of springs or spring-clips holding it on. Have a look around the outside edge of the seal with the door open.
