HL ping Problems

Hey.
Every HL game/MOD i play i have an erratic ping.
It jumps from about 250/300 to anywhere from 1000-5000!
On other games it seams to be fine. a bit high but still playable.
I have a low spec computer,
Cyrix 333 (P263)
Voodoo 3 2000
56k v.90 modem
CMI8330 sound card (ancient)

Any ideas on how to sort this out so i can accually play CS and TFC?

Have you tried looking for a modem tweaking guide on the net? I've not got any links to hand. The joys of broadband.

and go to the hl tweakin bit, it's old but still useful

what isp you using?
i use ntl dial up, and other than some fairly unstable nights, its mostly fine. the only isp that will pretty much allways give you a bad ping is aol as far as i know.

if your using a differant isp, and youve been getting laggy games since the big move, then trace one of the servers(perplex has helped several people who've asked about that on other boards).

RANT TIME: OMFG BTO U HAVE TO DIE BY MY HANDS I WILL FIND U GRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRRR 150 pings and monster loss and choke all day, usually i get the loss and choke but not as bad and ping is usually nice but still pretty poo for 40 a month, NTL OR BY GET YOUR HIDES TO MY STREET AND GET DIGGING

since its unplayble cs wise and i'm skint ie. i'm not out on town drinking myself to oblivion and i cant even vent my frustration on newbs
