And dont laugh :( Not really daoc realted but maybe some experts could help.

I have problems after reformating my computer with my A: drive and cd rom. When I look under controlpanel, system it looks ok. Says units are working ok and both have drivers installed dated 2001.

I have pretty old samsung products, Samsung cd rom SC-152L , not sure of the name of my A:drive thingy.

My question is if I need/should update these drivers, or if windows automatically does it for me when reinstalling and getting servicepack etc.

I cant seem to run new cd games in my cd rom currently, tried two different copies of Battle of middle earth and it doesnt even find the disc, but older cd's like daoc is ok.

Any suggestions/thoughts ? Could it be flawed discs of the new game or must I do something ?

Thx in advance !

Ok don't be angry with me asking but you're not trying to run a game on a DVD (of which there are a few these days) in your cd-rom player? :)

Windows, and certainly WindowsXP will have built-in drivers for nearly all hardware, even if it's not a specific one for your brand but a generic one, it should work. If you have installed Windows from that cd-rom that means it's all properly connected so can't be that.

The fact that you CAN play cd's like daoc means that it is in fact working properly. I know out of experience from work and at home that cd-roms that are worn out but not broken just yet will have difficulties with some types of media, or for instance cdr's burned at 16x speed while they can read cdr's burnt at 2x or 4x.

Says PC DVD -rom on the disc, and the reqs for the game lists DVD*8.

Does this mean my 52 spin cd rom cant read this game ???

It will not if it's cd-rom drive only...but you can buy a cd/dvd drive in one for cheap now about £20(30 euros or so.)

Yep you need a DVD player then. And like the others I would suggest buying a DVD/RW. They cost next to nothing these days and you can Read DVD's, CD's and the write or rewriteables. And on top of that you can burn CD's and DVD's yerself too!

I for instance burn my whole Catacombsfolder + maps, SC tools custom UI's and screenshots on one DVD. Then when I have to format the PC or I visit some friends who want to look at the game I can just copy that DVD to the PC again without having to patch everything :D

Ooh and to add to the confusion a bit: Be careful when buying as you got got DVD and CDRW combo drives (it burns CD's, and can read CD's and DVD's) and DVD/RW drives (it burns CD's and DVD's and can read CD's and DVD's)

A brand like LiteOn is usually good and cheap.
