scouts (alb), hunters(mid), rangers(hib) are the bow user's of the realms. Armsmen in albion also get the ability to train in crossbows although its a pretty uncommon spec to have high.

As Meatballs has posted above, you can have an archer type character on any realm.
Just to clear up a few things:

Alb = Albion (Arthurian)
Hib = Hibernia (Celtic)
Mid = Midgard (Viking)

Regarding guilds, at low levels , you don't need to worry about guilds, by the time you get to 10+ level, you'll probably get offers to join guilds. (However, I didn't join one until around 32nd lvl).

Oh yeah, and welcome to DAOC :)

Pick any realm you like the look of. I wouldn't recommend an archer class as they kind of suck though. :p

Come to Hibernia Prydwen!

We rock!

Well... actually, we do rock and we really need more players, just so we can rock some more :)

/em wonders about heading to Emain to rock!

As for class, pick something you like the idea of. If you want to play an archer, Hunter (Midgard) have fast bows and can have pets, Scouts (Albion) can train in shield, so good defensive class as well as the bow, also the most powerful and longest range bow, but the bow is very slow, or a Ranger (Hibernia) which is arguably the best archer class and has great self-buffs (adding strength, dexterity, quickness and armour, as well as a nice speed boost) and has the best all-round bows.

All archers use stealth.

Welcome to Camelot... It is a silly place :)

I don't know much about the other archers but Hunters (Midgard) are generally regarded as a fun class. They solo pretty well, but aren't generally as wanted in groups as other classes.

But be prepared to try a bunch of different classes for a while, so you can find out what kind of class suits you. Plenty of people on here to give advice, too.

yeah but your forgetting that scout = gimp :)

in coming patches hibernia get's bows every bit as heavy as the scouts longbow, that with pathfinding too means rangers actually shoot harder than scouts (which the scout TL and ranger TL has made very much noise about to mythic :)) have better meelee too because of path, what? shield spec? uber? yah right :) ever tried landing slam on an assassin????? Muahahahahhahh!!! rangers just own scouts whichever way you look at it :) also since you need to spec to 42 to get slam your gonna have to gimp at least one spec line which could be more useful :)

that said, the person who said that all archers use stealth is only slightly on the ball :) would be more accurate to say that all archers CAN use a very gimped version of stealth compared to what it used to be, still handy as hell for attacking non stealthers though :) but if they have an assassin with them then your screwed :D

as bad as stealth is compared to what it was though, i have to say that it's saved my ranger from more level 50 zergs than anything else would ever EVER have been able to do :) even lowbie's with low stealth can evade lvl 50's, worth mentioning :)

More to shield than slam. :p
A ranger can't even hit a scout let alone own one. There's that handy skill, engage. Eg. Assassin PAs, hit engage, they get their CD blocked, ranger just gets owned.

hehe ok picture this:

scout: innocnetly hopping along crim valley, totally unawares of the ranger on the valley wall, stealthed,

ranger: pulls an eeeeeevul grin and draws bow, then destealths! noooo!

ranger: "feck! knew i should have specced stealth higher, what? that's a scout? ahhh no matter then :)"

scout: sees ranger on valley side, "wtf?!?!?!?!?! eek midget!!" hits engage

ranger: "eat arrows ya gimped sod!"

ranger: xxxxxx has blocked your arrow! xxxxx has blocked your arrow!

ranger: "bugger this for a lark!" draws stilletto's and begins running at the scout.

scout: "hmmmm, he's charging me? this should be...interesting..." begins backing off careful to keep his engage up.

ranger: reaches scout, who drops engage to start trying to hit the dexterous little midget

ranger: "AVE ITTTT!!!!!" whallop!

scout: whilst running "shiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiittttttttttt!!!! he's got a damage add?! bloody path whore!"

ranger: strings his bow and leisurely shoots the scout in the back twice, killing him, "hehehee, love albs, ooooh, another abilitiy point! wooo!" :)

sound familiar? :)

No, I'm a minstrel don't forget. After meeting me most rangers tend to be muttering something more like. "Damn this ground is cold and wet... and there's a worm crawling into my nose. Bloody Minstrels!"

Yep, 64Mb is a bit low (is that system ram or gfx board ram?). I'm surprised it works at all if it's system ram.

From DAOC FAQ...

The minimum system specs you'll need to play Camelot are:

If you have a Pentium II:

PII 450
256mb RAM
600mb free hard drive space
32mb 3D accelerated video card

If you have a Pentium III/IV:

PIII 450
128mb RAM
600mb free hard drive space
16mb 3D accelerated video card

(Please note that Voodoo 1/2/3/5 cards are not supported in Camelot, although Voodoo 3's and 5's may work).

The recommended system is:

PIII 1ghz
256mb RAM or higher
32mb 3D accelerated video card

As for the PKing... Well that cutpurse you met was a mob (I'm sure you'll get your revenge sooner or later). You won't be PKed for good until you venture into the frontier lands. There is no PvP at all outside the frontiers/battlegrounds.

The cutpurse attacked you because he was aggressive to you and you got too close. Most mobs in the low levels aren't aggressive until you attack them, but that isn't the case with the cutpurses (or most mobs in the game at higher levels). You can find out how a mob regards you by targetting them. If it says in the chat window that the target is aggressive then keep your distance unless you want to fight it. There is a scale:

Friendly (will not attack you - can trade with friendly merchants)
Neutral (will not attack)
Hostile (will not attack, but might join in a fight against you if you fight too closely)
Aggressive (will attack you if you get too close)

Some mobs are on a 'faction', meaning that you can change how they regard you by either killing them (which eventually will make them aggressive to you) or killing their enemies (which will eventually make them friendly to you).

hehe, didnt forget for a minuit, i was just thinking of all the lvl 50 scouts you witnessed being brutalized by rangers of practically any level :) gotta hurt seeing your realm mates dying like that :D

and yes i know minstrels own rangers :) hehe they own just about anything out there if played right, so it's hardly a surprise :D

I never witness it. If a scout gets attacked by a ranger near me the ranger eats dirt. :D

Friendly (will not attack you - can trade with friendly merchants)
Neutral (will not attack)
Hostile (will not attack, but might join in a fight against you if you fight too closely)
Aggressive (will attack you if you get too close)
Not quite right...
Friendly - you cannot attack, will not attack you, can be interacted with (trade / talk).
Neutral - you can attack, will defend itself (will NOT attack you unless you attack it, or one of it's friends), can be interacted with (trade / talk).
Hostile - you can attack, will defend itself (will NOT attack you unless you attack it, or one of it's friends), cannot be interacted with (will give you a dirty look).
Aggressive - you can attack, will attack you on sight, unless it cons grey to you, cannot be interacted with (will give you a dirty look).

I have found that some green con aggro mobs do attack on sight and others don't - or is that just me. This is from running right through the middle of a whole pack of them (and having done it many times). Seems to depend on the mob

Some mobs don't seem to attack you instantly, however I'm yet to see an aggro mob that won't attack you if you stand near it for a short while. The majority just gank you as soon as they see you. :p

also you can attack some friendlys, some strangers, and especially mobs you've actually managed to make friendly via faction :)

just thought i'd mention it :D

You can't make mobs friendly via faction; they go neutral. You can't attack friendlies. You can attack merchants if they are neutral. ;)

hehe, i know for a fact about one hibby who managed to make curmudgeons (who are normally flagged as aggro but on faction) flag friendly :) and he could still hit em :) perhaps it's been changed since that patch (1.32) but i havent heared anything about it :m00:

Oh yes they can be friendly, Svartalfs in malmöhus was sooo friendly to me after 7 lvls (43-50) of killing drakulvs non-stop. This was in 1.45.

But that didnt stop me for farming the named ones :p.
