Help with weapon speeds and stuff

I am about to do the final touches of my SB template, when I stumbled on something I cant really solve. That is the weapon speeds and how it would affect my damage output and preformance.

I have a really good main hand sword, that I plan to use, but it has only 3.1 in spd. My questions how that would affect me, and what I could gain on getting a sword in main hand with a higher speed.

Could anyone please explain once and for all how weapon speed affect damage? And if there will be any drawbacks of having different speed in main and and left hand?

Any help would be appricated.. and please no guesses, that will only confuse me even more..
