I'm putting my Cleric away for a bit and concentrating on my Armsman.
He's currently at 7th lvl and specialises in Sword and shield type combat..

Any advice for Skill development and playstyle etc etc...?

imo :
For a good planning of your armsman, check out the Catacombs site. Great help in character development.

As any tank class, stick to your weapon of choice. If you go s/s, stick to it maxxing shield (since blocking is your compensation for a bit lesser amount of damage compared to e.g. 2H and pole) while keeping the sword damage at a firm high lvl.

Rest I would say parry but also crossbow since training in it can have some usefull purposes :)

Train both shield skill and weapon skill at equal levels and dump the odd point into parry. Not too much though, as you may later want to invest a bit in polearms or 2-handed as well, for more damage in RvR. But for the first 20 or so levels, keep going the shield/weapon route and then later when you are a bit more used to the class, you can still think about widening your skill path or taking the initial route to the max.

my final build wil be
42 shield for slam
50 slash, since slash weapons are easiest to get
29 polearm (RvR)
24 parry

at lvl 42 i will have
42 shield for slam
29 slash amathyst is a great styl since it add bonus to hit
29 polearm (RvR)
11 parry

for the lower lvls
stick to sword and board until lvl 25

personally if I were to make an armsman, I'd either go for

50 thrust or 50 crush
50 Shield
rest parry

(incidently I'd be a saracen thrusting/shield armsman :) )

or

50 thrust or 50 crush
50 polearms
7 shield (or whatever it is to get engage)
rest parry

(highlaner/briton thrusting polearm probably)

Speccing slash isn't worth it to get better drops imo, (you ought to be using the highest quality enchanted playercrafted weapon you can get your hands on) because slashing isn't strong versus chain/scale armour.
