Help Spellcrafting

Hi.

I just joined the spellcrafting skill today, and i am having some trouble finding what i need! Are all the required items to make 'gems' is it inside Camelot? And once i have made the gem do i get any item and out it on it like dye? I can't see anything that makes much sense in the spellcrafting panel to me so i need some very basic help plzzz =)
