HELP! (please)

I updated hl to 1.1.0.7 and couldn't download server info from won (the game tried all the won servers with no luck). I tried uninstalling hl and cs completely (deleting the game directory and registry entries) then re-installing the game but still no luck.



Does anyone know how i can sort this out?

even gamespy won't get me a server list, i did a trace route to a won server and got this:

don't look too good to me, no wonder both hl and gamespy gave up

The traceroute looks fine (considering your in the UK and WON is based in the US)

Are you running a firewall, like Zonealarm?

if you updated to 1.1.0.7 then zonealarm would see that the HL.exe has changed and would deny it access to the net until you told it otherwise.

But...as lamespy cant get a server list either, maybe there is a problem with your ISP and WON.

Instead of trying to get a WON server list, use the Barrysworld one....In Gamespy, Add a master server (look at the help if you dont know how) and in the address enter "hlmaster.barrysworld.com" (without quotes) and for the port enter 27010

i do use zonealarm but it wasn't running at the time. I tried adding the bw master server list, it's no use to me since hl can't connect to WON at all. Me thinks an e-mail to my isp is needed!

I do have CM though so if you're using a modem then like Mister says yours is fine.

Zonealarm has a habit of running even when you think its not.
I think it runs vsmon.exe as a background task even when its closed. Which is the vector service monitor or something.

However, there is something else you can try.

Go to c:\sierra\halflife\valve (or whatever your HL dir) and find "woncomm.lst"

BACK THIS FILE UP SOMEWHERE.

Then edit the original using notepad. you should see something like

etc

Now, replace the names of the servers with the IP addresses below...but dont change the port numbers.

half-life.east.won.net = 63.251.143.218
half-life.west.won.net = 216.52.220.16
half-life.central.won.net = 63.251.143.213

So for example, instead of half-life.east.won.net:6003 you will have 63.251.143.218:6003

Get it?

Do that for every server listed in that file and then save it. If it still doesnt fix your problem, restore your backup of the file.

Its true zonealarm did that to me a stopped me updating once because while it was closed it was still operating.
