HELP PLEASE! - My new GF4 Ti-4200 hangs on games!

Problem:

Bought Leadtek WinFast A250 GF4 Ti-4200 (64Meg) today and plonked it into the PC to replace my aging GF2 GTS.

I installed the latest 29.80 Detonator drivers again.

Runs no hitch until I try 3D applications (games) whereby it hangs after 20 to 30 secs. I have tried 3DMark 2001 SE and GP4 so far and both hang.
:(

System:

ASUS A7V Mobo
Athlon TB 900Mhz
384 Megs DIMM

Please help! Is it a power supply problem?

It's not the drivers.

I used the drivers out of the box which are older and they still did not work, hence I tried the newer (beta) ones.

God I am fucked off. Bad day at the office. Come home. Install. Wanting to play Warcraft 3 and this shit happens.

Free gift to anyone who cures the problem.

Direct X = 8.1

If it was an overheating problem would that not affect the 2D side of things as well? It's only the 3D games that seem to lock.

Nope 3D puts the card to the total test and can show up overheating, have you checked the card HSF?

When you say hangs, do you mean total locking, requiring a hard reset?

If so, the overheating idea is probably right.

Yes. Hangs and means I have to pull the plug.

The HSF? If you mean the fan then yes - it is running properly. I have the case open now too.

Is the heatsink loose, don't pulled hard at it though. Does this problem occur with the side of the case off?

The HS is rock solid - as they tend to be on Leadtek cards.

I have had the case open all day testing.

Wasn't there some shit about GF4 cards being too power hungry?

I had this exact same problem with my Ti4400 until I changed the AGP mode in the system BIOS from x4 to x2. No noticeable change in performance but no locking up, either. :)

I'd be interested to know if this works for you, Ono. Otherwise it sounds likely that power could the issue.

Check out this thread for more ideas.

All very interesting :) I remember when i had a GF3 the picture would tear quite badly with (and only with) RtCW. I tried changing from 4x to 2x and it fixed that too. It also had no effect on performance ,funnily enough.
AND.. mine was a Winfast too. If you go to their website there is information about it, including some downloadable thingymajig for changing from 2x to 4x and back again :)
