Help, overclocking asus a7v266 with amd 1400

Hello there,
I was wondering if anyone could give me advice as I am having trouble with the multiplier settings on the asusa7v266 board. I have it set to jumper free mode , and when I change the multiplier through the bios (eg to 11 x) there is no change in CPU clock and in soft sandra it still shows up that the multiplier is 10.5x (default for 1400 amd chip) Does any one know why this is happening?
Also when overclcoking the FSB if I tak it beyond 138/35 my usb mouse stops working, this is a huge increase from 133/33 default settings. Can anyone give me any tips for overclcoking this chip and board.

cheers
John

I have the same board and processor and have had no problems. I assume that your processor has been unlocked, otherwise I dont think you can overclock it.

The original KT266 chipsets were a bit unfriendly to fsb overclocking with USB devices.

unlocked!

ahhh I presumed from what I have read around that from 1.2 to 1.4 Ghz AMD thuderbird chips come unlocked and there is no need to connect the level 1 bridges with the old lead pencil trick. If this is not the case I'm going to have the horrid task of getting my heatsink off my cpu (it's a tight fit!)

I have an usb to ps/2 connector so I will put my mouse in through that once I find it and then I can disable usb functions and I'll crank the fsb up a bit

Just out of interest what is a safe temperature to run and AMD 1.4 Ghz chip?

doh!

I meant "if this is the case I will have problems getting the heatsink and fan off my cpu"

Idle Temperatures:
< 20 C: Who the heck are you and what are you using? Liquid N2?
20-35 C: Normal and acceptable for high end aircooling
35-45 C: Getting a little on the sweaty side of normal, but par for typical generic aircooling solutions.
45-55 C: You're definitely doing something wrong, especially if you've got a nice high end heatsink. Look into it.
> 55 C: You've got serious problems.....

Load temperatures:
< 30 C: You're working magic
30-45 C: Good Job. You're normal and very safe
45-55 C: A mite high, but normal for low end/generic aircooling. You might experience an occaisional lockup or two but you're still OK for the most part.
> 55+ C: You're going to be experiencing frequent lockups and other problems. Look in to nicer cooling solutions or take that overclock down.

Hot baby!

mmm well my cpu (AMD 1400 Thunderbird) is running at about 50 to 52 degrees Celcius just while running Win2k and not much else. When I give it a thrashing in Quake 3 it goes up to nearly 60 C!
I'm using a TaiSoi CGK7600092 Copper Bottomed HSF, it got favourable reviews when using the 7000rpm delta fans but I'm still using the fan that I got with it - a delta 5000rpm 21cfm but I think that my temps are too hot.

I have two 80mm ys tech fans in my case, one blowing in at the bottom and the other extracting at the top.

I presume that I have not installed the Heatsink properly, I used artic silver 2 but had great difficulty attaching the heatsink to the mounting and I expect that the AS2 got smeared every where. Any one got any advice on installation? and any other tips toi keep my system cool

cheers

Changing the fan on top of the heat-sink should help.

And you didn't use too much AS, did you?:eek6:

the heat

Yes I might order the other fan, and yes I might have been a bit generous with the Artic Silver 2, perhaps when I get a new fan I will also re install the heatsink with less AS2

redone my artic silver 2

Right I got my heatsink off (after about 20 mins) cleaned the cpu core and the heatsink and re applied my artic silver 2 and the temperature looks to be the same, drat, time to try a new fan I think.

Okay..humour me for a sec...but have you tried opening the window?
I have mine near the window. If the window is closed and the door to the room is too, the room gets warmer and the CPU temp can rise to around 50C at load. (this is with a thermo engine heatsink and two YS-Tech 80mm case fans). When I open the window so it's a little cooler in the room but not uncomfortable, the temp drops around 10 degrees or more. It's like a hairdryer, blowing hot air on something ain't going to cool it in a million years. You need cool airflow and lots of it.

back to the overclocking point..

Ok I checked my L1 bridges and they are all joined, I'm not sure if the other bridges effect the ability to overclock and I noted down which were joined and which were not. Any more ideas on why I when I increase my multiplier nothing happens? do you have to adjust the core voltage as well?
cheers for any help

Increasing voltages makes things more stable but at the price of increasing the heat generated. Make sure your FSB and muliplyer tally.

And look out for a section in the BIOS that says whther it takes the CPU speed from the Multiplyer ONLY or the multipleyer X the FSB.

Also, check the dip-switches on the motherboard are step up for jumper-less frequency selection, or whatever it's called.

I know a guy with a water-block system, and his radiator is outside his window, with the piping plumbed through the wall. How l33t is that?;)

Hmm... my idle CPU temp has gone up to around 45degrees over the last week. Sure it was around 34degrees a while ago. Wonder why?

hmm Ill try opening the window then. But if im running it overnight any suggestion as how I keep the burglars out;)

Athlon say their processors will run fine till the internal core reaches 90 C (probably 75 - 80 in what the probe registers it at) Mine will rise to as much as 62 c underload but is completely stable. Im just afraid of the darn thing going on fire if I run it 24/7.

In reply to below - it's getting busy on this post!
I have the DIPswitches set to jumper free mode. I'm pretty sure that the cpu speed is read form the multiplyer x FSB (from what I've read in overclcoking reviews about this board).

However I'm not sure what you mean by "Make sure your FSB and muliplyer tally."

As you might have also read I seem to lose USB support after increasing the FSB beyond 138/35 I presume this can not be prevented by altering the voltage through the core.

I've checked my L1 bridges and they are all connected.

cheers for any more help

does anyone know if there are DIP switch settings for the multiplier for x11 and above, or does it HAVE to be done through jumper free mode

very, until he has to move his pc ;)

Or some kid knocks a hole in the radiator - he'd not notice untill the processer started melting through the motherboard, I expect.

That's what I meant. You need to make sure that your motherboard is not just using the multiplyer X 100 (default FSB for chip). You need to tell it to take the ACTUAL FSB and use that with the multiplyer.
So if you've overclocked to 138 then it should be 138 X multiplyer. In my KT7A manual it tells me there's this option in the CPU set up menu, although it's greyed out and seems to just take the multipyer and X it by whatever I've set the FSB to anyway. This is what you need to make double sure of cos it sounds like it could be where you're going wrong.

My fsb overclocking is ok it is recognised, I presently have it at about 145 (got rid of my usb mouse), it is changing the multiplier.

I have been playing with the dip switches noted down from the A7A chipset, and the cpu multiplier does not change but boots up at 1400mhz.
I presume that either there is either a fault with my motherboard, or more likely that for some reason my CPU is not unlocked even though all the L1 bridges are connected. Are there any other reasons that that could stop the multiplier being changed.

cheers

I currently have a 1.2Ghz Oced to 1.33Ghz and maintain an idle temp of 28c and a full load temp of 48c but then again my mobo is more accurate than most and reads the temp 5-7c higher than other mobos because it has a probe that touches the bottom of the processor.

My case also only has one extra YS-TECH fan and thus keeps it temp and noise level down.

As Wij pointed out the KT266 has a problem with USB devices when ocing which I suffered from until I plugged them into my monitors self powered HUB.

If you've done the bridges right then it should oc unless you are missing something on the mobo.

Clucthing at straws here....
I remember a setting I messed about with once. It was where you could tell the motherboard to take it's timing from either the AGP or the PCI clock speed. Maybe there's the option there?
