ok I have a logitech dual optical mouse man BUT in q3 (or any fps game ) it doesnt track very well.

It stutters or ignores my commands to move (I can slide it quite some distance before it actuallky responds)

HELP!!

Chuck it out the window and buy a ye olde' ball mouse.

What sensitivity do you use?

I found when i switched to an optical mouse, that fast swift movements were the best way to move it, since if you moved it slowly/smoothely, it would judder. Hence i turned up the sensivity, and watched my accuracy improve by loads :)

It's prolly just the mouse type .... although ive had no probs with ms intelli-eye optical. You should make sure r_finish "1" is set within q3 (and prolly other q3 engine based fps games) ..... but I wouldnt expect that to make a great deal of difference. If you haven't updated the drivers from those that came with the mouse, id d/load them from the logi site.

my sensitivity is very high (14) no mouse acceleration.

what does r_finish do?

I think it `syncs' the frames, so the game runs smoother.

Does not having acceleration change the menaing of sensitivity? I use sensitivity 25, however i use Linux, so maybe there's a differant scale.

I gave back my logitech and grabbed a MS intelli mouse v.3
its better in tracking BUT

it doesnt handle small movements very well at all.
it sort of shifts along instead of a steady motion very crap :/

I always thought optical mice where a step forward.

Not necessarily for some games unfortunately. I'd go back to a ball mouse in a second if there was one that had two additional side buttons like the ms optical. I have things bound to them in just about every game I play now and could not face trying to find room on my keyboard as an alternative now. I tried the bs2k and HATED the shape of it.
r_finish "1" should help prevent input device lag ...... but I don't think this is your problem.

Sounds possible you have a faulty mouse ?.
Also what surface do you use for it, I know they claim to be usable on any surface, but as with any mouse it still makes a large difference. The best I've found have been the allsop raindrop cloth mats or simalar, the mouse seems very smooth on these.
Do you have any problems in other engines (HL / UT / Q2 / other fps).

I got a logi dual optical nearly as soon as they were released in the uk , and have had no problems.

Well, your problem is obvious:
There's no ball or wheels being pushed when you move it, so there's no real smootheness. If you turn up your sensitivity, you'll soon get used to moving the mouse directly, rather than smoothely.

its weird but with the ms mouse the small movement problem is there in windows as well.

i used the mouseinfo tool that lets you check all the mouse inputs and the higher the mouse speed the higher it skips pixels.

If you put our mouse speed to the fastest (the setting i use) it skips 4-5 pixels!

if you lower the mosue speed you can get better small movements (no skipped pixels)

This is with no mouse acceleration so the 'speed' is constant.

I use an everglide mousepad

As Herr Robo mentioned earlier I'd be careful about what surface you use. My optical mouse used to do some very wierd things on various mousemats. I now use an everglide pad and it's great. I rate it better than any ball mouse I've ever had and that includes a bs2k.

You don't say if the mouse is cordless or optical. If it's cordless then swap it for a corded one.

Bought a cordless ms intellimouse explorer a month ago, and took it back to pcworld to swap it for a corded for the exact same problems you're getting.

MS intellimouse optical corded is IMHO the best mouse for gaming since my old Logitech mouseman+ gave up the ghost :)

its corded.

its only when i make small movements on a high sensitivity...

Another thing to try would be to plug it in ps2 stylee. Maybe a device setting for usb doesn't like something that starts up with q3, hence why it moves ok in windows.

I have a logitech dual optical and Allsop mouse pad (which 0wns btw - even if it is from PC World)

I've noticed none of the problems you have suggested. As someone else said try it in the ps/2 port. If it were me i'd try reinstalling the drivers, and if that doesn't work swap it for another one.

Does the juddering also happen when ur not playing games? you could try resetting q3 back to its defaults and see if that helps.

If it doesn't take it back and swap it

Well I swapped my logitech for a intellimouse and put both in the ps/2 slot with no change.

what has made a difference is if I put cl_mouseaccel on which lessons the effect alot. (I hate mouse acelleration so i have set it at 0.3)

Its better but not a true solution :/

As i've kept maintaining, it is not a fault, it's the result of no mouseball.

Without a wheel controlling the mouse movement, there's no smootheness, or control, so small sweeping movements will feel increadably jerky, for the simple reason that you're not moving the mouse at a constant speed. What makes it even more evident, is that the optical mice have a very high sensing thing, so the slightest change in speed will be picked up.

The solution, is to use a high sensitivity, and to get used to moving the mouse directly, to where you want, rather than smoothely.

Hmmm sorry but thats a load of old cobblers, the v3 intelli explorer and intelli optical are as smooth as you can move it. I use it on a low sens, so not sure why you are suggesting to use the mouse on a high sens, doesn't make sens to me ;)

What u are basically saying is that u have adapted to the dampening and less responsive nature of the ballmice.

Problem basically sounds if anything that Arfbandit is using too high a sens with the optis having higher scan rate the dpi is a bit less iirc, not really any way around that but to use a lower sens (which personally I think is a good thing to do anyway, but a lot of ppl prefer high sens, in which case u might have to find a higher dpi mouse)

Ok ive got it ALOT better now.

Basically im not using the intellimouse v3 drivers.
Im using the default ms drivers that came with 98 and its ALOT smoother.

very very bizarre.

Although now i dont have the use of the thumb buttons.
