You need to define "jerky" and whether you're online or not.
If you're playing online ;
Is it a ping/lag problem shown on the lagometer as yellow or red bars on the lower half of the meter, or ;
Is it a Frame problem where the graphics card can't display the picture at a fast enough rate to make the motion fluid.
If you're offline, then it sounds as if your system isn't good enough to play the game !

I have P3 380 mhz, 56k. so me pewter is decent enough.

If you mean it's @ 830 then yes it's quick enough if you have a vid card in the region of a DDR GeForce 1 (like I have, PIII @ 820 atm, timedemo 1 for demo001/002 = 75fps @ 1024*768, everything maxxed) or GF2 MX and anything higher. If you meant a PII @ 380 then thats a tad slow really but a decent vid card as mentioned above should still see alrightish FPS.
Need to know yer vid card to suggest some tweaks and confirmation on your correct CPU speed.

Maturity isn't directly correlated to age either... I wouldn't like any girl if she wasn't smart and reasonably mature.

ram. how much do u have? you need to set the com_hunkmegs to 3/4 of your TOTAL system ram. (or it might be cl_hunkmegs ... cant remember of the top of my head )
anyway, if it is a FPS problem, then it is either ram, cpu or gfx card. if u have a good cpu and at least 128 mb ram, then it is most likely ur gfx card. try gettin the latest drivers for it. and if that doesnt help ... then go pester someone who knows what they are talking about :E

me ram is 64, so i might have a prob there. Me voodoo2 gfx card is 8meg and that aint bad. dunno is quake3 like Star Trek Elite force where you need a top notch system in order to get max. performance?? me bro plays that game and he gets a jerky screen as well:|

If you are trying to use massif high quality settings then you're fubar'd m8 cuz a V2 is NOT a quick card for Q3 which is very hungry for video memory cuz of big juicy textures... which is partly why nvidia drivers now use S3TC for OpenGL.
640*480 is the only realistic res for that card I'm afraid... and is your CPU 380MHz? 830MHz?
If you have 1000 pennies spare, buy a GF2 MX and enjoy a massif increase in FPS. Anything slower really is NOT that good for Q3

thats why i have a GeForce 2 GTS 64mb, athlon 1.3 GHz, 512 mb ram and the other obious woes of a poota.

tbh mate, your pc and connex are fine for most pc users, but for a gaming rig, it's a little poor (no offence), particularly your connection. Q3 will run poorly on most systems if they are not very current, or u must spend a fair amount of time making compromises between speed and look. On your system u ought to tweak ya graphics quite a bit, but in all reality you would be better off buying a gf2mx as someone mentioned to get something reasonable out of it for a good price. Your always gonna be fighting a losing battle on modem tho, whatever your system.
Best thing to do is go to the link that Requiem posted, download the graphics configs and try get the maximum fps you can stand b4 it gets too ugly, setup your connection, also on the site and get yourself a decent isp. If it's still no good, think about a cheaper way to upgrade your system, such as AMD Duron or Celeron processor, gf2mx graphics. Can u get ADSL or cable modem where u are? Find out.
