Help needed for infiltrator

I recently dinged 50 on my inf Uma who is a critblade. I did it the hard way, autotraining stealth to level 48 so I'd benefit in the long term, so I've been mainly a meleer with poison until recently. From 48 I have had experience in stealthing/PAing, but I'm still uncomfortable with my binds and hotbar. I'd like to sort this out and end up with an intuitive and responsive set-up, as I have found to my cost a couple of times that there are some fast SBs out there who target and PA quickly just as we see each other in stealth...I wanna know how it's done.

My current set-up is to use left-hand on arrow-keys for movement and the mouse for targetting (guess this is bad). My hotbars are

bar 1

1. PA
2. CD
3. SS
4. blade switch
5. dragonfang
6. garotte
7. achilles heel
8. (spare slot for RA in due course)
9. macro to switch to bar 2
10. stealth

bar 2

1. dragonfang
2. garotte
3. achilles heel
4. hamstring
5. leaper
6. rib separation
7. 1 handed weapon switch
8. 2-handed weapon switch
9. macro to switch to bar 1
10. stealth

Once in melee I tend to use keyboard only except when I need to use the mouse to target instead of F8.

I've tried F8, v, `, CTRL, INS for nearest target or stick and I'm still not comfortable. Some are nice and handy but then become awkward when I switch from movement mode to melee mode.

Even tried mouse look but I hate not having the targetting ability.

Any advice would be warmly appreciated. PM me if you prefer secrecy :) A good critblade hotbar set-up with advice on where to bind /stick, nearest target (and /face for that matter) is what I seek.

Thanks,

Uma Thurman, 50 infiltrator

I use a 5 button mouse, and have it set up the following way:

Mouselook is off by default...
Mouse toggle on Rightmousebutton: So I can hold right mouse down and turn around/direct myself etc
Camera toggle on Mouse4: So I can hold down mouse 4 and RMB to look around me whilst still being able to run as I want on the keyboard.
Mouse5 is move backwards: This is just becase when stuck to an enemy I find it hard to press S and hit my style keys (2,3,4,5,6) with one hand. This relegates another task to the mouse leaving you to concentrate on the keyboard for hitting styles and strafing effectively.

WASD is forward, strafeleft, backwards, straferight. I don't have turn left bound at all. By Rightclicking and moving my mouse, I can turn.
Nearest Target is Ctrl for easy access with my left hand
Last Target is Caps lock (and the reason I talk in Caps so often in game:p)
Q is stick
E is face
Z is sprint
F,C,V are the camera controls

Using this setup, once in a fight, you can control almost all your movement via the mouse. If you'r enemy is stuck to you, you can constantly move backwards which ensures they are always infront of you, so no chance of target not in view, and Dual shadows should you have it works almost everytime. You can turn your camera around and check out your surroundings and admire the scenery mid fight with the mouse wthout any chance of screwing a style up on the keyboard. This can be a life saver when midfight you turn around and notice enemies approaching from behind, giving you a chance to snare the enemy and make a quick escape to fight again. Everything on the keyboard which could be usable in a fight is under one hand print (at least with my large hands ;)), with the important actions such as face/sprint/stick mapped to save space on the quickbar. I had until very recently used turn left and right as A, and D but much prefer the strafe method. Took a night or two to get use to the changes but I love them now. I even thought of reverting after the first night of messing things up, but you just need to learn to use the new system :)

One thing is to get your Mouse4 and 5 buttons to work, you may need to map them to a key with your driver software and then map the functions to that key, as DaoC doesn't seem to recognize mouse 4 and 5 at all :(

My hotbar will look something like this when I finally get to 50 :)

1: Perf
2: CD
3: SS
4: Hamstring
5: Amy Slash
6: Leaper
7: Rib Seperation
8: Bastard Sword: Perferate Artery fun
9: Jambiya: 3rd posion/fasat reactionary weapon
10: Stealth

The higher numbes are hardto hit in combat, but as most movement is done on the mouse, you can afford to move your hand. Backstab chain leading to a similar setup is on the next qbar.

This will all change when we get the /qbar macro however. Perf and Backstab chain will be on first page, along with amy as an anytime, a /qbar2 macro and stealth. The above, minus the perf chain will be on page 2. Should be much easier to reach the required keys this way.

I'm still not entirely sure this setup will stay. I've actually been comtemplating using the mouse4 and mouse5 buttons for strafing instead. This would give me more movement in combat using only the mouse, and by strafing a target you can see what might be coming behind you. Depends on how bad I find 'strafing in combat and missing' to be if I strae often.

If you are thrust, you obviously will need to make qbar adjustments for dragon fang to be included althoguh if you only went 39 CS, you won't need the space taken up by rib seperator.

[Edit: Didn't know the qbar macro was in already... Oops :p]

F1: sprint
F3: face
F4: stick

Quickbar 1:
1 - slow weapon (guarded rapier for PAing)
2 - PA
3 - fast weapon (long dirk)
4 - Creeping Death
5 - Stunning Stab
6 - Garrotte
7 - Achilles Heel
8 - Dragonfang
9 - Vanish
10 - Stealth

Quickbar 2:
1 - slow weapon (guarded rapier for PAing)
2 - Backstab II
3 - fast weapon (long dirk)
4 - Thigh Cut
5 - Hamstring
6 - Leaper
7 - Rib Separation
8 - Dragonfang
9 - Vanish
10 - Stealth

Quickbar 3:
1 - slow weapon (guarded rapier for PAing)
2 - crossbow
3 - fast weapon (long dirk)
4 - 8: Various Poisons
9 - Pierce
10 - Stealth

Quickbar 4:
1 - /macro /yell I blame Derric
1 - /macro /g I blame Derric
1 - /macro /gu I blame Derric
1 - /macro /as I blame Derric
1 - /macro /b I blame Derric

Movement keys pretty much the default ones. Only really use the mouse for targetting, which can be a pain, espiecially playing the PA dance with a SB. F8 seems to be really unreliable these days for targetting the nearest one. On many occasions I've been standing right next to a mid, hit F8 and found I've targetted one at the back of the battle and I've just unstealthed myself in front of someone. :(

Many thanks all for taking time to type out replies here...it's much appreciated.

I'm using Goryk's post as a basis for my new binds (just making slight changes like not using caps lock :) ). I'm trying it now and it works really well. Takes a little getting use to but its superior to my earlier set-up. Have a virtual pint on me :)

Only ever played an inf in bgs, but I used this
W=Forward
S=Back
A/D=Turn
Q/E=Strafe
Use a microsoft 5 button mouse with middle mouse set to mouse look.
Button 4 (thumb) bound to F8
Button 5 (Outside of mouse, effectively the third finger) bound to the number 3

PA or /stick in positions 2 or 3 in quick bar, outside button on mouse does whichever then. In theory you can select fast and PA fast, got beaten to the draw quite a few times though, but that's down to timing as much as reaction I think.

I couldn't play this game properly without a 5 button mouse now.

That's what I use, common FPS setup, but it works well.

The main point being, your left hand has easy access to the number keys/quickbar. Once you get used to your setup, you can use any style/spell without looking at the keyboard.

Also helps if you keep your most used spells/styles at the lower numbers i.e. Primary anytime style = 1, block/evade chain =2 (so you can spam 2 & 1, if you use backup styles). With my arms I keep Slam on #4, so it's close to hand when I need it and I can slam stuff without looking for the relevant key.

So the most used styles should be the closest to your fingers, #1-6 are good for fast access.

I noticed you don't have Backstab on your setup... it's not PA, but, it does considerable damage and does come in use. Also you have a macro to switch quickbars, I tend to use shift+1, shift+2 to switch between them ;)

Yeah you would have been dead if I didn't miss it :(

Still we had a good fight...shame you ruined it by using IP and laughing at me afterwards

BTW, the random fire wiz that toasted you on Sunday night called Lyrra is me :) I guess you wouldn't mind the /laugh as you were all too happy to dish it out to my inf :) (Same goes for SM Knackerhexen, he's a preferred target too now as a result of a rather unsporting /laugh).

I do, had a crafted sword with +envenom so needed to qbar them.
You don't lose the + when envenoming it if you qbar the poison...
