Help, my PC is going slooowww

lo all, my pc is screwed. My games run fine (excpet my quake2 demos are jerky..) but its Windows that takes sooo long. I'm basically staring at the screen while it loads up windows for 2 minutes, and win explorer takes 5-10 secs to load. I think it could be a virus of some sort (not CIH), because i can 'almost' say that my HD is working fine.

PC specs :
win95, p2-400, 128mb ram, i740 AGP, Voodoo2, Internet explorer 5 (which is very slow, especially when writing in boxes???)


I was just wondering if anybody knows a very good virus detector thingy (even if that isn't the problem). I have NAVC but it only gets CIH.

What i do, is every 3-4 months, reformat (you need a good way of backing stuff up. i have 4 machines to do this) and if you have any bad sectors, do a low-level format, if you want to know more, i have the utils and the experience to help.


Why? cos when you install and uninstall things, they are not very efficient at doing this, nor windows.

Programs leave registry entrys and system files all over the shop when you uninstall them. dont trust installshield.

You cant help this, unless its a work machine where nothing is *meant* to be fiddled with.. unless you are sysadmin

the best thing to do if you only have 1 machine is to slap another HDD in there. this way you can copy the 95/98 install from the CD to your second HDD and just a matter of going to that directory and typing setup.

of course you need your legit *cough* serial number.

98 is a bitch for that, still aint memorised it

If your start up takes too long then consider using the MSCONFIG program. Which can be found at C:\WINDOWS\SYSTEM\MSCONFIG.EXE at least thats where it is on my Win98 machine. The program lets you chose which items it runs during start up, and will hopefully save u some time

But then again we are taking about Windows, which is very slow

I wish people would write programs for Linux so that we could use it....
And ideally release games on them first (full releases - not Q3a tests) that way we might well get somewhere.

Go to www.98lite.net and get rid of that ie4/5! Then it will stop sucking. (My god that was a bit of excessive plugging...)

The alternative would be to get a gameboy...
