Get on broadband - for the price you pay for dial up you can get broadband these days (unless ofc you are on pay as you surf type package)

Other than that, not really sure, sounds like something has died in ya pc.....and I don't mean a small furry animal.

try to ping a server, for example Prydwen or Excal. If that works, it's likely to be that just the DNS server of your ISP is down or out of order. Should work again soon, or you find another DNS server and enter it into your connection data.

I wouldnt trust PC world to tell you that your modems fine. I bought 2 faulty routers there in the last year, and the only diagnostic cabability they seemed to have was to plug it in and see if any lights came on.

'look sir, the power led is lit, it must be fine'

Try a different ISP, too. Someone like uk2.net (standard number, local call rates) that doesn't need a signup.

That'll tell you if it's your PC or your provider.

(May be nothing, but apparently quite a lot of Europe suffered a major outage about 3:30 bst this afternoon, fixed about 7:00 bst)

Unless PC World plugged your modem into a phone line and dialled up there is no way to tell if a modem is fine or knackered.

My guess is that they used modem test you can get via Control Panel which does a quick internal test on the card BUT which only tests the main chips modulating/demodulating. It doesn't test the chips which actually handle the signal and pass it to the modem processor, which are frequently damaged by adverse weather. I've lost count of the amount of modems I've replaced, and people have said ' but the diagnostics say it's ok '.

My reply is ' does it dial up properly - if not it's knackered '

It's true the modem test is about as reliable as the Windows "This device is working properly" text.

Does it dial up at all?

Is there anything in device manager with a ? or a ! on it?

An ATI could relate to the init string a modem will use when starting up an dialling - back in ye olde days you could enter a series of manual codes but the best thing to do now is DELETE the device from Device Manager (in contron panel >system ) and reboot. Windows will redetect - hopefully you're on WinXP as this simplifies the reinstall a bit.

Borrow a modem from a mate/work etc and try that one :)

DNS errors often are ISP errors as well like has been said above but not likely if one PC you have can dial and the other can't (how are you getting online atm?)

It dials up fine ... says connected @ 45.2 kbps or whatever and then when i click Internet explorer i get the Dns error screen :(

Also when i run a self diagnostic on my modem it says ...

1. Line OK
2. Dialtone OK
3. Card ERROR
4. Dialling test OK

Also i ve has some viruses in my drivers in the past ... but im not 100% of its my hard-drive or modem drivers ... im guessing its the latter ...

In afew weeks any im gonna upgrade from 512k --> 2Mb and get a gaming Graphics card like a radeon 9800 or so and a new external dial-up modem that a m8 tells me almost always gets a full 56kbps for him ...

As for how im online now ... im on my familes old Pentium 2 celeron :p and its just as fast as my own pc on the net if not faster which is abit weird considering it only has 16mb ram ... hehe

Also the drivers i has problems with were in my win32 drivers whatever they are

Take the modem out of the PC you're using and put it in your PC.

Aah good old DNS server problem :)

One solution might be that U'll need to specifiy ur ISP's DNS server into ur TCP/IP connection settings. Check on google how to do it for ur OS, cuz I cba to explain it.
