Just watched this and after reading some bad reviews I wasn't expecting much as the trailer was less than impressive. Yes it was cheesy at times and yes the effects were a bit bland, still as an overall film is was entertaining and as usual far better than the critics would have you belive. Gets a strong 7.5/10 from me, might even check out the comic books now to see if the hype is justified.

Plot was somewhat at a loss with what to do with itself.
Effects were OK, the potential was there but somehow it didn't pull it together.
My vote would be morre of 1 6/10. Daredevil was a better as was X-Men2. It wasn't bad though.

The writer has a few of the comics online. <checks> Or did, they were done quite well with a few moving images included, but they've clearly taken them down now for some reason. (Oh no, I was wrong - check this: http://www.hellboy.com/z-old-design/hbcomicsonline.html -- I'm not even going to wonder how this is hosted by playboy .... )

If you want to read the graphic novels, Seeds of Destruction is a good place to start.

In the final days of World War II, the Nazis attempt to use black magic to aid their dying cause. The Allies raid the camp where the ceremony is taking place, but not before a demon - Hellboy - has already been conjured. Joining the Allied forces, Hellboy eventually grows to adulthood, serving the cause of good rather than evil.

That part is true, actually. Hitler was really into weird occult shit.

That is what I thought in the begining but the basic idea of Nazi involvement in the occult is well documented. The story is far fetched sure but no more than any other superhero film, when all is said and done it is a pretty decent film and that is what matters :)

Saw a screener. Action according to form 1A with little to set it apart from other such movies. The effects werent that good either (the copy i saw wasnt the best quality tho). Nevertheless it was alil entertaining :)

Umm...how is this any less fantastical than DAoC? Apart from the demon child most of the story is based on true events. ;)
