depends which distribution [flavor] you try. some are easier, some harder. if you've never used a unix before there will be a steep learning curve I'm afraid.

Linux Mandrake makes it pretty easy to tackle. 8.1 is the latest version. The only problem with it is that it's become a bit of a resource hog. I have it running on my network server (p166, 80MB) and it's quite a bit slower than mandrake 7.2. Well... if you're NOT running Gnome or KDE it speeds up considerably. (I use Enlightenment as my desktop).

To get decent performance out of it I would recommend a p233mmx.

redhat is pretty easy, especially the install. allthough its a bit weird tho, like the kernal source isn't stored in any obvious place..

and when if you ever ask for help on a linux channel on irc, the moment you announce you use redhat you'll be ridiculed ;)

you can download redhat7.2, but its 2 CDs worth, which is a 1.3 gig download alltogether, so you either need a phat connection, or you need to have an almost 24hr online time with your 56k, like me

Anyone who thinks Linux is ready to replace Windows as a desktop operating system is plain fucking wrong. And most probably gay.

Alberto - you must have wandered into EFnet's #linux. It's mostly hardcore linux gusy there. They either use Slackware or Debian. I happen to be "one of the few RH and Mandrake advisors" there.

If you stop in there, check to see if there's a guy named "helper" in there. if so, type in "helper ex logic7"

$aw$all... Have you seen me on a server somewhere? If you're in the Ypsi/Ann Arbor area frequently, I can let you know when I'll be spinning a The Necto. Drop by (I'm waiting for the promoters, they'll be giving me a solid date soon).
