I know its in the wrong forum, but I need an answer. NOW

Is it possible to find out my office networks IP without asking the administrator?

I want to connect my lappy to the office network, but I need the IP. I'll be using XP pro as the OS on me lappy.

Any help you techy types.

Go to a station on the network & press (assuming it's windows) Start > Run & type "winipcfg" without quotes

Use the drop-down list to choose the network card & it will show yhe IP addy & subnet mask

O, btw, you do realise that if you connect your laptop to the network without clearing it with the administrator could result in your termination, don't you?

I don't just mean your job...

Go to a machine already connected to the network (or server console) - start a command prompt, and type in:

ipconfig /all

This will give you all the relevent IP addresses - DHCP server, DNS server, default Gateway, etc.

Hmm... for non Win9x PCs you'll need a computer account in the domain in order to connect to it. You can only join if you know a domain administrator account and password.

(Incidentally WINIPCFG won't work on NT, 2000 or XP. Use IPCONFIG from a Command Prompt)

Ain't gonna work, fella. :/

Can there even be a hard way of finding that out? What happened, did your computer produce a knife and cut your arms off? THAT would be a hard way of finding something out.

Well my lappy doesn't log on to the domain so to speak (cos I wanted to keep the welcome screen) it just goes into the shares and when a username is required it looks at the "Network Password" thingy in XP and sends that. I then have access to the network all works very well. Even when I use it at home it doesn't go mad cos the domain it had drives mapped to a minute ago have vanished, Unlike Win 98 :(
