I also do a lot of work as a tv sound recordist, there are several things you can do to improve the quality of your headset mic

Position - make sure the mic cannot be breathed upon, from the nose or the mouth. Usually the best place is just very slightly forward of the bottom lip, and to the side.

Angle - make sure the capsule is directed so that it picks up high frequencies, rather than bass frequencies from the neck (think of telephone quality, thats what you want for cs)

Proximity - most headset mics are omnidirectional, which means that they are fairly insensitive beyond a few inches, but still, make sure your speakers aren't being picked up.

Impedance matching - if you have the manual for your soundcard, check the impedance on the mic input (measured in ohms, eg 600ohms), and get a mic that has roughly the same impedance. That will ensure you get the maximum amount of level from the mic, and therefore less noise.

Meant to be for planes?

What on gods earth are you talking about?

Sennheiser are arguably the best (for teh masses) headphones available.

I personally own HD570s which are sexeh to the point where i ditched my bird to be with them.

I think he means Ayrton Sennheiser the (now deceased) F1 driver who owns an airline....

Yes yes, I know it's Nikki Lauda, but that wouldn't have worked would it?

Best headphones are made by Beyerdynamic and Sennheiser. I used to have some electrostatic headphones, which were really good, but I sold them.

:/

You can buy Sennheiser headsets from about £35 I think
Mine did cost quite a lot (£180), but I use them for audio too.
Ive also had the cheaper ones and they are far superior to any other cheaper ones.

If it's really a big issue, goto Maplin or such, and buy a mic-preamplifier, then plug the output of that into your line in on your sound card.
