Headphone icons next to name...

Hi folks.

When I press <esc> when in the game, beside the list of players is either a green headphone icon, or a red circle with a line through it. What does this indicate? Mine is ALWAYS a red circle, despite having the sound option for headphones turned on in the sound preferences...
