HDMI cable for my PS3

So my tele arrives monday, it's HD ready etc.

I'd like to connect my ps3 to it with a HDMI cable, is that all i need to do?

I did that and all I got was 1080i. I might try a rabbit and sheep next time, with luck it will grant me 1080p and 24fps.

Nah you are wrong, its well known in the 'in' circles that HIV cable is better than DVI and HDMI. they just don't advertise it

nope, because true blue ray rips are huge, as in well over 20gb per film. The ones you see around 5-10gb are not true HD, the are poor quality compared to the real thing.

yes. If you buy a Blu ray, or rent one, you will get lovely jubly HD. At either 1080p or 720p depending on the capabilities of your TV.

Make sure you update your ps3 firmware to the latest revision, as it updates quite a few options and capabilities. The upscaling of normal dvd's is very good (in settings), you can get a very good picture on a HD screen.

An awful lot full rips with full bitrate weigh in at 14gb or so, many Blu-Ray discs are padded out with extras etc. Only the 2.5-3 hour films are pushing the single layer discs to the limit, your average 100 minute film can easily be done at 14gb with no loss in quality.

SinCity or Batman : Dark Knight. You will be hard pressed to find better examples, way too many films use film grain and it really defeats the purpose of high definition. Ideally you want something shot digitally in high definition but without added film grain for bullshit 'artistic reasons'.

Fire some good films that are good in HD mate. Transformers etc, although transformers is a crap film! ("You're a soldier now!")

The Dark Knight is a good film though.

You really need a good sound system and a hdmi a.v receiver to fully appreciate dark knight IMO. The sound in that movie is on par with the picture.

SinCity is a stunner, the black/white shots with high contrast red blood look fucking amazing. The skin detail on close up shots is a thing of beauty as well. The thing that struck me about Dark Knight is the vibrancy of colours, skin detail and the clarity of reflections during the chase scene. Oh and the explosions were lush too.

Sadly there aren't that many great Blu-Rays that really show off the format at it's finest. Transfers from traditional film never look clean enough for my liking and I despise films that add grain to try get a warmer look. It washes out detail, classic example is 300, it should look stunning but the film grain in many scenes is a major major distraction.

Tears of the Sun looks amazing in HD, although it is a little grainy.

Oh and casino royale and quantum of solace, both stunning in HD.

I found that a £12 shielded HDMI cable was perfect for me. Make sure you get one that's got a thick cable because of the shielding. If you get a thin cable one, you might get speckling on your image from the cable picking up RF interference.

When you go through the setup, make sure you get output at the maximum capability of your TV and enable upscaling for DVDs.

You can play 1080p videos streamed from your PC with a neat piece of software called PS3 Media Server. The PS3 won't play the videos directly if they're MKVs but they play if streamed with PS3 Media Server.

Bluray is the way forward for films with colour and detail. I only buy a film on bluray if I consider it a good film and having it on Bluray brings something extra to the film. Most of my titles are scifi but they also have colourful visuals. Ironman, Blade Runner:Final Edition, Watchmen and Star Trek (2009) are all bright, colourful and HD brings something more to the film.
