i woke up this morning with an impulse, that i had to buy something. a can of diet coke wasnt enough to satisfy it so i went and bought a 37" HDTV to stick in my pad.
i have a Q regarding the vids though. the tv is very good quality but i noticed some of the vids seem blocky. im pretty sure its not the TV and im thinking its something to do with the videos being compressed in some way?

game demos look leet which is why i think its the vids :)

LOL.

Afaik it will prolly be because the vids aren't in HD (duh!). So SD on a HD tele will appear blocky due to SD vids having a lower pixel count compaired to the ammount on your HD TV? Right?

(Fuck I suck at explaining things)

my display is 720p and the vid says (HD) next to the title, so im assuming it should be in HD?
i dont have much experience with the videos, the only thing i got was that southpark episode (fun with weapons), but that looks really good too :)

on my tv earlier i did find a setting which reduces noise of SD sources to smooth it out, i turned that on as my tv pic wasnt so sharp and now thats crystal clear. i probably should look again at the vids.

NR = noise reduction?
why is it considered bad? its got 3 different levels, but if it makes the picture better surely thats good :) it doesnt cause motion bluring with it on either.

i will check those links out too

oh also, its got a HDMI connector on it. is it worth buying a HDMI cable instead of using the component for my 360?

No, the premiums now come with hdmi. If yours has it it will be a seperate port under the a/v connection. only premiums in retail in the last few weeks have them.

got it about a year ago, oh well. i didnt buy it specifically for HDMI it just happened to come with it :)
There is no way a year old Xbox360 would have HDMI in it :p Or are you talking about your TV?

if your tv has vga port get the 360 vga cable:)

noise reduction is considered bad in the purists view as it blurs most of the time.

there used to be a really good guide on toms hardware about it but cant seem to find it, if you like it may as well keep it on its upto you in the end

Gah! Why do people recommend the VGa cable without first checking what the native res of the tv is?

Because his tv might not even support a res up to 720p over VGA. The quality of VGa is good, but with the amount of settings MS now have with firmware upgrades, it is no better than component on most screens.

By the way how much did you pay for what, whats the brand and model number. Can you provide a linky of it anywhere? We may be able to find you a better Tv for the same money - especially as it has only lasted a day. Problem wit lots of the cheaper brands is there is no parts available for repair and you end up with a dead tv a few years down the line that no one can do anything with.

We were selling 37" HD lcd's for £499 a year ago at work mate, they went down to £399 before we stopped selling them. You can get cheaper, and with better brands than matsui too.

I'd have a good look around the internets for prices and models before you go back to that shop tomorrow. See if a full refund isn't the best solution.

For that price the Toshiba should be the 37C3030 model. It's good if you can get them to shave another £50 or so off the price.

took it to the shop and it powered on, powered off and then back on again.
bring it home, it powers on, turns its self off then wont power back.
they tell me there is no problem. some engineer is going to come out to check it here, im gonna make sure he confirms it as fucked so i can get a refund. i cba having to goto court to get the money back.

As long as you are happy, the screens I looked at and the reviews and group tests I have read put Lg quite low of the pile though.
