Hayes V.92 PCI Voice Faxmodem

I have recently changed from a Dimond Supra Express 56e Pro to a Hayes V.92 PCI Voice Faxmodem, this was because I was borrowing the Diamond modem and had to give it back :/. With the diamond I was getting very little lag and pings of around 150 on clara anytime. Now I have changed I get small lag spikes every couple of seconds and players appear to jump around the screen most of the time. I also get some very long lags of up to 30 seconds without disconnection. This is not caused by someone picking up the phone ;) and I didnt get either of them with the Diamond. Is there anyway I can tweak the modem to make these lag spikes go away?

Thanks,

V92

I just got a V92 modem (Zoom V92 external serial) as well, hoping to better my pings. TBH I only noticed the difference while surfing and only slightly bettter when gaming (pings about 200 ish), when compared to my old Modular V90 part-softmodem. IMO this has not been worth the £60 spend so far. Maybe it's my ISP (BTO), but I tried clara and freeserve as well. Am gonna try Nildram.

BTW whats your isp Chris?

Any thoughts????

You won't see great improvement in gaming pings.

I just did!!!

Sod the hayes it was crap and is going back :p. Ive mangaged to get hold of the diamond again and hopefully i'll be able to swap it with my old sw modem (The previous owner wasnt using it for games).

BTW I am on clara's 24/7 package on a test number (6 digits) which rocks! I get pings as low as 140 with the supra again and lag isnt bad either :).

:) cool!

Btw what servers are you using? I can ping to jolt at 95ms!!! However this has recently risen to 103 ish. Such a cool modem :)
Someone mentioned that 0845 dial ups are even better, I think due to the fact it isnt routed through BT's crappy FRIACO routers.

95ms on a 56k modem! :D Nice one!
I guess your line quality must be excellent. Pushing up the gain often helps :). Done anything like that to your line?

0845's tend to be better due to software compression. BT certainly didnt in the past (and afaik still do not) support the use of software compression. Good 0845 isp's generally do.
You may find this a useful read.

Nope, but my line is a new un :) Installed late last year. I have got some tips apart from gain. Make sure you have nothing else using that line! Like a digibox as they 'can' really lower you transfer speed or even a telephone. And any kind of extension lead lowers quality, as it picks up more noise. So a good plan is to place your PC next to the main line that enters your house.

Increasing Gain unfortunatly increases noise, thus can sometimes even worsen your connection!

Always tweak your connection using the guide

http://home.clara.net/sflatt/modemsetup.htm

and of course use all seeing eye, as its far better than the crap that is called Gamespy! :)

I connect through Freeserve, but used to use Jolt Anytime (supported software compression) which *WAS* very fast. I still use Jolt servers because the pings to them are always much less than Barrysworld ;)

enjoy
