well since this forum aint used much i mayas well start a thread.

just finished HP5 and tbh wasn't overly impressed although i enjoyed the book it was far fom being one of my favourites.

my reasons being.

the HP books in general are quite upflifting affairs but this one seemed very depressing (i accept they are supposed to be going through the teenage years but on the whole there was a lot of griping and moaning between all characters in the book)

the stuff with hermione knitting clothes for house elf's (being the supposed smarted of the trio surely she would know that house elf's are only freed if given clothes by their master)

the death so widely talked about (not so much a death but the person falling through an arch and then the realisation the person was dead)

as above....if harry wanted to know if so and so was still alive why didn't he use the one thing that would have given him a definate answer)

like i say i still enjoyed it but and this is probably a lot to do with the hype before release

I enjoyed as much (if not more) than the others. More happens and you see a lot more of the magical world and lot more of the personalities of the regular characters.

Also I found this the funniest of all the books. :D

There were a fair few really funny lines.

It was quite good, i won't correct you too much hogg - except hermione wasnt trying to free them by giving them clothes.

The most annoying thing was the dialogue.

The *oh yeah* line that repeats a million times.

Also it isnt as long as it looks it certainly doesnt have the same width as most hardbacks - its probably 400-500 in a normal size.

not so much dialogue but i did say to my missus a few times that i think JKR had learnt a new word *dully* which seemed to be on every page.

i'm sure she was trying to free the house elf's/elves sp? which is why dobby was taking them all, either way the whole thing just ended up being dropped and not mentioned again.

back to the hyped death scene, i dont know wether the chapter was finished before or after JKR talked about the death but that whole chapter was pure cheese with almost everyone bar harry and neville in a possible life or death situation.

mind you saying all that there does seem to be a lot of star wars influence going on in this one which hopefully will make the next ones more interesting.

AFAIK the house elves obtain their freedom if they pick up or recieve a piece of their masters clothing - all the students at hogwarts are considered masters of the hogwarts house elves. Harmoine was covering them in dirt so that the elves would pick them up by accident, because most house elves dont want to be freed (its too scary a prospect and shameful etc, they have pride in being good servants).

Doobi who has his freedom, but continues to work, was picking them all up because he likes clothes now (house elves usually just wear towels/tea cosys etc), so none of the other house elves could even accidently pick up the clothes.

Is it only me that thinks Harry Potter is an over-rated children's story? :x

She was leaving them out for the elves to pick up and be freed but the elves noticed and (so dobby says) refused to clean the gryffindor common room because they were insulted. So dobby cleans the whole common room on his own but he doesn't mind because he likes harry so much.

mirieth: The first did seem like a childrens story but the ones after seem more of a fantasy story.

I found the first two very much aimed at children but they appear to be getting more sinister.

As for the last book well I thought it was good - definately setting the scene for the last two books but necessary as she introduced a whole load more characters.

I liked it a lot, though it was very depressing.

The words "darkly" and "stalked" appeared on every page...

Fred and George's leaving rocked!

I thought that Snuffles dying was a bit overrated and didn't have the effect on me I thought it might...(before it happened I was worried for Arthur Weasley and for some reason, Neville Longbottom).

Still want to know more about Snape and why Dumbledore trusts him so much. Dumbledore kicking ass was very cool.

And the prophecy all seemed a bit pointless tbh. I mean, obviously Harry and Voldemort are due to duel to the death one day.

Roll on book 6.

I'm re-reading the whole series again, and I can't believe I missed the mentioning Sirius right in the first Chapter

Ditto that - all seemed a bit "Yeah we know that's gonna happen, so what?"

I'm betting Harry is Lord Voldemort as a child, and there's time travel involved in there somewhere.

:p

I am wondering what the future holds for neville now it has been established he isnt the "one"

Or is he

As he is marked mentally by what happened to his parents

Neville needs to have a serious battle with Bellatrix Lestrange. I loved when he got all kickass at the DA stuff.

Yeah I'm annoyed we didn't see the OWLs results. I thought that would be the last chapter.

Bellatrix Lestrange needs a (northern accent) "right good seeing to" imo I found her to be a lot more dark than Lord Voldemort - heres hoping she dies a very horrible death at the hands of Neville :p

How harry's gonna become an auror with his goddamn awful grades that he should be getting, is what I want to know.

He'll probably manage to scrape an Outstanding or something in Potions so he can carry on for some strange reason and his transfiguration is pretty dire. They're probably like GCSEs 20% for a pass, 55% for an A or summat.

Nah, it's so blatantly obvious, it was all a dream, ala Dallas.

Tbh, I think they hyped the death of a "central" character a bit too much, I was thinking it would be Snape, or someone like that, who I figure as quite a central character, although he is probably too obvious. I also agree about the arguing and moaning (although all teenagers have that stage) was a bit much. I think HP may well end up an Auror, as I think he may well get extra tuition from Dumbledore, but thats just my own thoughts.
Overall, it is an ok book, but not the best in the series, for me thats book 4. ;)

I think if Rowling tries to pull off a "Bobby Ewing in the shower" jobby, ahe'll be lynched and hung from a nearby tree by many many upset people.
